BigCommerce Migration Service For US Stores Moving To Shopify

Products, option sets, customer groups, order history, reviews, gift card balances and every indexed URL, moved to Shopify or Shopify Plus on a written data map and a rehearsed cutover. Run by senior engineers who overlap your US working day.

What moves, what changes shape, and what cannot move at all

Every migration we run starts with this table filled in for your store. You sign it off before we write a line of import code, so nothing about launch day is a surprise.

BigCommerce-specific

The three places BigCommerce migrations go wrong

Option sets and modifiers. BigCommerce lets a product carry variant options and non-variant modifiers side by side, with price adjustments on either. Automated migration apps flatten this badly: a jacket with size, colour, fit and a monogram field either breaks the three-option limit or loses the monogram. We decide per product family whether to split products, combine options, or move a modifier to line item properties.

Customer group pricing. Groups on BigCommerce often carry category-level discounts and price list assignments that nobody has documented. On Shopify Plus these map to B2B companies and catalogs; on other plans to customer tags plus a discount or wholesale app. We export every group rule and test real carts against the old prices before cutover.

B2B Edition. If you run BigCommerce B2B Edition, you have company accounts, buyer roles, quotes and shopping lists. Shopify Plus B2B covers companies, locations, catalogs, payment terms and draft-order quotes natively. Shopping lists and some approval flows need an app or custom build. We tell you which, in writing, before you commit. For heavier B2B needs see our B2B commerce development page.

Also on our checklist for US stores

  • Sales tax: Avalara or BigCommerce tax settings moved to Shopify Tax or Avalara for Shopify, with nexus states and exemption certificates carried over
  • Payments: Braintree, PayPal or Stripe on BigCommerce to Shopify Payments or your existing gateway, with saved cards handled honestly (most do not transfer)
  • Shipping: ShipStation, ShipperHQ or carrier-calculated rates rebuilt and tested against real zip codes
  • Headless BigCommerce frontends rebuilt on Hydrogen or Next.js, see our headless commerce agency page
  • ERP and inventory feeds re-pointed, see ERP and CRM integration
  • Google Merchant Center feed rebuilt so Shopping ads do not pause
Search traffic

Keeping your rankings through the move

Because Shopify forces its own URL structure, a BigCommerce move changes almost every indexed address you have. That is manageable. It only becomes a traffic loss when the redirects are an afterthought.

Crawl before you touch anything

We crawl the live BigCommerce store and pull your Search Console landing pages, so the redirect list covers the URLs that earn traffic, including old ones BigCommerce is already redirecting.

One hop, closest match

Every old URL gets a single 301 to its closest new equivalent. No chains, no dumping retired products on the homepage. Titles, meta descriptions, alt text and structured data carry across.

Watched for a month

After launch we check Search Console daily for 404s and coverage drops and fix them the same day. Deeper work continues through Shopify SEO if you want it.

Audit and data map

Catalog, apps, integrations, tax, shipping and URLs documented. You sign off the map above for your own store.

Build and trial import

Theme or headless storefront built on a development store, then a full trial import you can click through and test orders against.

Rehearsal

A second import timed end to end, so we know exactly how long the final delta sync takes and pick a low-traffic US window for it.

Freeze, delta sync, DNS

Short content freeze, new orders and customers since the rehearsal synced, redirects live, DNS switched. BigCommerce stays up read-only until you are happy.

Thirty days of hypercare

Search Console, checkout and integrations monitored, fixes shipped same day, then a clean handover or an ongoing maintenance plan.

No BigCommerce case study, and we will not invent one

We have 37 published case studies and none of them is a BigCommerce migration. Some migration clients do not allow publication, so we share relevant migration references privately on a call, where you can ask the questions that matter to you.

The closest published work is on Shopify itself: Future Roots, a plant store we built with OTP login and a one-page checkout, and Wayuvega, a Shopify app for logistics. The general version of this service is at BigCommerce to Shopify migration.

Frequently asked

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often.

What does a BigCommerce migration service include?

A BigCommerce migration service moves your store to Shopify through both platforms' APIs and rebuilds the parts that have no direct equivalent. Ours covers products, variants and option sets, custom fields, customers and addresses, customer group pricing, order history, reviews, gift card balances where your Shopify plan allows, blog content, and a complete 301 redirect map. It also covers the storefront itself, whether a Shopify theme or a headless build, plus tax, payment, shipping and ERP integrations. Everything runs from a written data map you sign off before any import code is written, and ends with thirty days of post-launch monitoring.

How long does a BigCommerce to Shopify migration take?

Most BigCommerce to Shopify migrations take between six and fourteen weeks. A straightforward catalog with a new theme sits at the short end. Stores with complex option sets, customer group pricing, B2B Edition features, several integrations or a headless frontend sit at the long end. The timeline covers an audit and data map, the storefront build, a full trial import, a timed rehearsal, the final cutover and a month of hypercare. We give you a written schedule after the audit and plan the final switch for a low-traffic window in your US time zone.

Can customer passwords be migrated from BigCommerce to Shopify?

No. Passwords cannot be moved between BigCommerce and Shopify, or between most platforms, because they are stored as one-way hashes that only the original platform can check. Customer profiles, addresses, order history and group or tag assignments all migrate. After launch, customers set a new password through an account activation email. We write that email with you so it reads as a welcome to the new store rather than a security notice, time it for after launch, and stagger large lists so your sending reputation is not affected.

How do BigCommerce option sets and modifiers map to Shopify?

They need a decision per product family, not a blanket import. BigCommerce separates variant options, which create SKUs, from modifiers such as text fields, checkboxes and file uploads, which do not. Shopify supports up to three options per product, and non-variant inputs become line item properties or a product options app. A product with four or more real options gets split into separate products or has options combined. Modifiers with price adjustments need extra care so the charged price matches. We model these cases with you during the data mapping stage, before anything moves.

What happens to BigCommerce customer groups and B2B pricing?

They move, but into a different structure. On Shopify Plus, BigCommerce customer groups and price lists map to B2B companies, locations and catalogs, with payment terms and draft-order quotes available natively. On other Shopify plans, groups become customer tags combined with a discount or wholesale app. BigCommerce B2B Edition features such as shopping lists and multi-step approval flows may need an app or a custom build. We export every group rule, including undocumented category discounts, and test real carts against the old prices so no trade customer sees a surprise on day one.

How do you migrate from BigCommerce to Shopify without losing rankings?

Treat the migration as an SEO project from the first day, not a launch-week task. First, crawl the live store and export your Search Console landing pages so you know which URLs actually earn traffic. Second, map every old URL to its closest new equivalent with a single 301 redirect, because Shopify moves products under /products/ and categories under /collections/, so almost every URL changes. Third, carry across titles, meta descriptions, image alt text, structured data and internal links. Fourth, load the redirects before DNS moves and test them on staging. Fifth, watch Search Console daily for a month after launch and fix any 404s the same day. Expect some short-term movement even when all of this is done right.

Can order history and reviews be migrated?

Yes. Historical orders import into Shopify as archived orders, so they show in the admin and in customer accounts for reorders and support. We import them without sending notifications or touching inventory. Product reviews are exported from BigCommerce or your reviews app and imported into the Shopify reviews app you choose, keeping dates, star ratings and verified-buyer status where the app supports it. Both are checked against the source counts after the trial import, so you can confirm nothing is missing before we schedule the final cutover.

Do gift card balances transfer from BigCommerce to Shopify?

Usually, but the method depends on your Shopify plan, so we confirm it before promising anything. Gift card codes and remaining balances are exported from BigCommerce and recreated as Shopify gift cards, either in bulk through the API where your plan permits it or through a gift card app where it does not. Customers keep using the same codes after launch. Balances are exported during the final content freeze so cards used in the last days before cutover carry the correct amount. We reconcile totals between the two systems and share the report with you.

How is US sales tax handled in the migration?

We rebuild your sales tax setup on Shopify before launch and test it against real addresses. If you use Avalara on BigCommerce, you can keep it through Avalara for Shopify, or move to Shopify Tax if it covers your needs. We carry over the states where you have nexus, product tax codes, and exemption certificates for wholesale or tax-exempt customers. Test orders are placed to addresses in each nexus state to confirm the correct rate is charged. We do not give tax advice, so your accountant should confirm the nexus list, but the configuration work is ours.

Do you have BigCommerce migration case studies?

Not published ones. None of our 37 public case studies is a BigCommerce migration, and we will not invent one to fill the gap. Some migration clients do not allow publication, so we share relevant references privately on a call, where you can ask about data mapping, redirects and cutover in detail. Our published Shopify work includes Future Roots, a plant store with OTP login and a one-page checkout, and Wayuvega, a Shopify app for logistics. Since 2014 we have delivered more than 150 projects across seven countries, with a 4.9 average client rating.

Can you migrate a headless BigCommerce store to Shopify?

Yes, though the frontend is a rebuild rather than a migration. A headless BigCommerce storefront built in React or Next.js talks to BigCommerce's own APIs, so its data layer has to be rewritten against Shopify's Storefront API. We rebuild it on Hydrogen or Next.js depending on your team and content setup, keep URLs identical where the new routing allows, and redirect the rest. The data migration runs in parallel with the frontend rebuild. Our headless commerce agency page covers the Hydrogen versus Next.js decision in more detail, including the running costs after launch.

How much does a BigCommerce to Shopify migration cost?

It depends on five things more than on product count: how many custom fields and option sets need remapping, whether customer group pricing or B2B price lists have to move, how many apps need replacing, how much of the theme is rebuilt rather than restyled, and how many integrations (ERP, 3PL, marketing) have to be reconnected. A small catalogue with a standard theme is a short project. A store with B2B pricing, a custom theme and an ERP link is several times the work. We send a written quote after the audit and data map, so the price covers what your store actually has.
