Shopify Payment Gateway Integration

Stop Losing Orders At The Payment Step

Most Shopify stores launch with one gateway and Shopify Payments and stop there. That works until a card issuer declines a transaction a second processor would have approved, a customer abandons checkout because their preferred UPI app or wallet isn’t listed, or your finance team spends Monday morning matching settlement files against orders by hand. We integrate, route and monitor the full payment stack, multiple gateways, local payment methods, fraud rules and reconciliation, so a declined transaction becomes a retry instead of a lost sale.

Multi-Gateway Routing Fraud & Risk Rules PCI DSS Aligned Recurring Billing Ready Settlement Reconciliation 24/7 Monitoring
Who Needs This

When One Gateway Stops Being Enough

Shopify payment gateway integration means connecting one or more payment processors, local payment methods and fraud rules to your store through Shopify’s supported Payments Apps API and checkout extensibility, not by editing checkout code directly. It starts to matter once a single default gateway is quietly costing you orders. These are the eight problems we see most often.

High Decline Rates

A single gateway declines transactions a second processor would approve, and the lost order never shows up in your reports.

Missing Local Methods

Customers abandon checkout when UPI, wallets or a regional card network they trust isn’t offered.

Silent Subscription Failures

Recurring charges fail with no retry logic, quietly eroding revenue you already counted as recurring.

Manual Reconciliation

Finance matches gateway settlement files against Shopify orders by hand, every single week.

Fraud & Chargebacks

Fraudulent orders slip through with no risk scoring, then arrive months later as costly chargebacks.

Cross-Border Friction

International shoppers hit currency mismatches or unsupported card types right at checkout.

Heavy COD Dependency

Cash on delivery drives up fulfilment cost and return rates where prepaid adoption is still weak.

Slow Checkout

Redirect-heavy payment flows add seconds to checkout, and every extra second costs conversions.

Business Outcomes

What A Properly Integrated Payment Stack Changes

Not features for their own sake. Here’s the business case for each one.

Increase Conversion

More payment methods and higher approval rates mean fewer shoppers who reach checkout and leave.

Reduce Cart Abandonment

Local, familiar payment options remove the last-second reason to close the tab.

Recover Failed Recurring Revenue

Smart retry sequences and card updater logic win back subscription charges that would otherwise silently fail.

Cut Fraud Losses

Risk scoring before capture catches patterns a fixed rule would miss, before the chargeback arrives.

Faster Financial Close

Automated reconciliation replaces the weekly spreadsheet exercise your finance team dreads.

Support International Expansion

Multi-currency pricing and locally trusted gateways make a new market feel native, not bolted on.

Reduce Manual Operations

Webhook-driven settlement matching and dunning sequences replace tasks someone currently does by hand.

Build Customer Trust

A checkout that never feels broken, slow or unfamiliar is one customers come back to.

What We Build

Payment Engineering, Not A Single Toggle

Ten categories of work, each solving a specific gap a default Shopify Payments setup leaves open.

Multi-Gateway Integration

Challenge: one processor’s decline is a lost sale, not a retried one.
Solution: Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, Stripe, PayPal, Adyen or Braintree wired in side by side.
Outcome: a declined transaction has somewhere else to go.

Smart Payment Routing

Challenge: the best gateway for one card network isn’t the best for another.
Solution: routing rules based on card BIN, region, order value and historical approval data.
Outcome: every transaction goes to the processor most likely to approve it.

Shopify Payments Configuration

Challenge: payout schedules, currency settings and dispute handling are often left on default.
Solution: a proper Shopify Payments setup tuned to your payout cadence and market.
Outcome: predictable cash flow and fewer avoidable disputes.

UPI, Wallets & Local Methods

Challenge: customers abandon checkout when their preferred local method is missing.
Solution: UPI, popular wallets and region-specific methods added through gateway partners.
Outcome: a checkout that feels native in every market you sell to.

Buy Now, Pay Later

Challenge: higher-ticket items lose customers who want to split the cost.
Solution: BNPL providers such as Simpl, LazyPay, Klarna or Afterpay integrated into checkout.
Outcome: a higher average order value from shoppers who wouldn’t pay in full upfront.

Recurring Billing

Challenge: a subscriptions app’s fixed billing logic doesn’t match your renewal or retry rules.
Solution: the Selling Plans API paired with gateway tokenization and a custom retry sequence.
Outcome: fewer subscribers lost to a card that simply needed a second attempt.

Checkout Payment Customization

Challenge: you need to hide, reorder or rename payment methods based on cart conditions.
Solution: Shopify Functions using the payment customization API within supported checkout.
Outcome: the right methods shown to the right customer, without forking checkout.

Fraud & Risk Rules

Challenge: static block lists catch known bad actors, not new fraud patterns.
Solution: layered rules across velocity, device and address checks, tuned to your order profile.
Outcome: fewer chargebacks without adding friction for legitimate customers.

Settlement Reconciliation

Challenge: gateway settlement files rarely map one-to-one against Shopify order IDs.
Solution: an automated matching layer built on gateway and Shopify order webhooks.
Outcome: a finance team that reconciles in minutes, not days.

AI In Payments

Where AI Actually Helps A Shopify Payment Stack

Fraud detection, routing and reconciliation are three areas where AI adds measurable value, scoped narrowly instead of bolted on as a marketing feature.

Fraud Detection Beyond Fixed Rules

A static rule blocks a known BIN or flags an order above a set amount. A trained risk model reads device fingerprint, velocity, and shipping-to-billing mismatch together and scores a transaction before capture, catching patterns a fixed rule never sees.

Smart Routing That Learns

Which gateway approves a given card network in one region is rarely the same as another. Instead of a fixed if/else rule, routing logic trained on your own approval history improves automatically as transaction volume grows.

Reconciliation That Handles Edge Cases

Matching a gateway settlement report to Shopify orders is a pattern-matching problem, reference IDs, partial refunds and currency rounding rarely line up cleanly. A trained matching layer handles the exceptions a simple spreadsheet formula can’t.

Chargeback Risk Flagging

Orders with a higher chargeback likelihood can be flagged before shipment based on patterns across your own historical dispute data, giving your operations team a chance to review before the product ships.

If your roadmap includes AI work beyond the payment stack itself, our AI agent development, automation and chatbot development team can scope that separately, from customer-facing support agents to internal workflow automation.

Why It Matters

Single Gateway vs Smart Multi-Gateway Routing

A single gateway is simpler to set up. This is what changes once approval rate, redundancy and reconciliation start to matter.

 Single GatewaySmart Multi-Gateway Routing
Approval RateFixed to one processor’s coverageRouted to whichever gateway approves best
RedundancyGateway downtime stops all checkoutsAutomatic failover to a backup processor
Local Payment MethodsLimited to what one gateway supportsUPI, wallets and BNPL added where relevant
Fraud CoverageOne processor’s built-in checks onlyLayered rules across all connected gateways
ReconciliationManual, one settlement file at a timeAutomated matching across gateways
Recurring Billing ReliabilityNo retry if the gateway declinesRetry sequence with card updater logic
Setup ComplexityFast, minimal configurationMore upfront work, 2 to 6 weeks typical
Cost At ScaleLower approval rate costs more in lost ordersHigher approval rate recovers the setup cost

A single gateway is the right starting point for a new store. This is what changes once order volume makes approval rate and uptime measurable business costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Shopify Payment Gateway Integration

What is Shopify payment gateway integration?

Shopify payment gateway integration means connecting one or more payment processors, such as Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, Stripe or PayPal, to your store through Shopify's supported Payments Apps API and checkout extensibility. It also covers local payment methods, fraud rules and settlement reconciliation, not just switching on a single default gateway. The work that actually affects revenue is usually downstream of the connection: which gateway handles which transaction, what happens when one declines, and whether settlements reconcile against orders without a spreadsheet. We scope those explicitly, because an integration that only proves a test payment succeeds is not finished.

Do I need more than one payment gateway?

Most new stores are fine with one gateway. A second starts paying for itself once decline rates, gateway downtime or a missing local payment method are measurably costing you orders, typically once a store is processing meaningful volume across several regions. Before adding one we look at your actual decline data, because another processor means more fees, more reconciliation and another integration to maintain. If declines are really caused by fraud rules that are too strict, or by a checkout losing people earlier, a second gateway fixes nothing. We will tell you which of the two you are facing.

Can you integrate Razorpay, PayU or Cashfree with Shopify?

Yes. We integrate these and other regional gateways alongside Shopify Payments, with routing rules that decide which gateway handles a given transaction based on card network, region and order value. Each gateway is connected through Shopify's supported payments app path rather than an unsupported checkout hack, so it survives platform updates. We also test the parts merchants tend to discover late: refunds and partial refunds, currency handling, webhook reliability, and how each provider reports settlement. Availability of specific methods depends on your acquiring setup and the gateway's own onboarding, which is their approval process rather than something we can shortcut.

What is smart payment routing?

Smart payment routing sends each transaction to the gateway most likely to approve it, based on factors like card issuer, region and order value, instead of pushing every transaction through one fixed processor. Done properly it also handles failover, so a gateway outage during a sale does not stop orders. The honest caveat is that routing only helps when you have enough volume for the differences between providers to be real rather than noise. We start by measuring approval rates per gateway on your own traffic, then write the rules from that data instead of from vendor marketing claims.

Can you add UPI, wallets or Buy Now Pay Later to my checkout?

Yes. We add UPI, popular wallets and BNPL providers such as Simpl, LazyPay, Klarna or Afterpay through your connected gateways, so customers see the local payment methods they actually use. This is one of the higher-return changes available in checkout, since Baymard's research puts average cart abandonment at 70.19%, with a missing or unwanted payment option a recurring reason buyers leave. What we cannot do is enable a provider you are not approved for, because each has its own underwriting, category restrictions and fees. We map which providers fit your business and market before promising anything at checkout.

How do you handle failed subscription payments?

We build retry sequences and card updater logic on top of the Selling Plans API and your gateway's tokenization, so a declined renewal gets a second and third attempt on a schedule instead of silently cancelling the subscription. Retries are paired with customer messaging, because a genuinely expired card needs the customer to act, and dunning emails recover more revenue than retry logic alone. Every attempt is logged so you can see real recovery rates rather than guessing. Retry schedules also have to respect card scheme rules, so we keep them within those limits instead of hammering the gateway.

How do you reduce payment fraud and chargebacks?

We layer velocity checks, device signals and address verification on top of your gateways' built-in fraud tools, tuned to your specific order profile so legitimate customers are not blocked while suspicious orders get flagged before capture. The tuning is the actual work. Rules that are too aggressive cost more in rejected good orders than the fraud they prevent, so we measure both sides and revisit the thresholds with real data after launch. For higher-risk categories we prefer a narrow manual review queue over blanket blocking. No setup eliminates chargebacks, so the goal is a defensible ratio rather than zero.

Can you automate settlement reconciliation?

Yes. We build a webhook-driven matching layer that reconciles gateway settlement files against Shopify orders automatically, including partial refunds and multi-currency settlements that a manual spreadsheet process usually gets wrong. Unmatched items are surfaced in a report for a human rather than quietly written off, which is the difference between reconciliation and hopeful arithmetic. Where your finance team uses an ERP or accounting system, we push matched settlements into it instead of asking them to re-enter data. Timing depends on each gateway's settlement schedule and file format, so both get confirmed during discovery before the work is quoted.

Is my payment data secure with a custom integration?

Card data stays inside your payment gateways' hosted fields and tokenization flows. Our integration code never touches raw card numbers, which keeps your PCI DSS scope the same as using a certified gateway directly. That is a deliberate architectural choice rather than a convenience: the moment an integration handles card data itself, your compliance burden and breach exposure change completely. API credentials live in your own accounts and secret storage, never embedded in theme code. If a requirement would expand your PCI scope, we say so and propose an alternative that keeps sensitive data with the processor where it belongs.

How long does a payment gateway integration take?

A single additional gateway with basic routing typically takes 1 to 3 weeks. A full multi-gateway setup with fraud rules, recurring billing and reconciliation automation usually takes 4 to 6 weeks, depending on how many payment methods and markets are involved. The delay in practice is rarely development time; it is gateway onboarding, merchant account approval and sandbox credentials, all of which sit with the provider. We raise the paperwork and access requests on day one for that reason, and we sequence launches so the store keeps taking payments throughout rather than needing a risky cutover window.

Can you support cross-border and multi-currency payments?

Yes, using Shopify Markets alongside locally acquiring gateways, so international customers see pricing and payment methods that feel native to their market instead of one foreign-currency checkout. Local acquiring usually improves approval rates, and showing prices in local currency with duties handled upfront reduces exactly the surprise costs Baymard's research identifies as the leading reason people abandon a cart. The constraints here are commercial rather than technical: each market needs an acquiring relationship, and duty and tax handling has to match your legal setup. We work through that with your finance team before configuring anything.

Do you provide support after the integration goes live?

Yes. Gateway APIs, fee structures and fraud rules change over time, so we monitor approval rates and settlement accuracy after launch and adjust routing and rules as your transaction data grows. Payments are the part of a store where silent failure is most expensive, because a broken webhook or an expired credential can stop orders without any visible error on the storefront. Alerting is therefore part of the build rather than an add-on. We also review the setup ahead of peak trading periods, when a gateway limit or an outgrown fraud rule is most likely to bite.
