Magento Performance Audit

Find Out Exactly Why Your Magento Store Is Slow

Throwing fixes at a slow store without measuring first wastes money and rarely lasts. A performance audit profiles the whole stack, backend, database, extensions, frontend and hosting, to find the real bottlenecks with evidence. You get a clear, prioritised report of what is slowing the store, how much each issue costs you, and exactly what to fix first.

Who Needs This

Eight Signs Your Store Needs A Real Audit

If two or three of these are true, you are guessing at the cause. An audit replaces the guessing with evidence.

It is slow, cause unknown

Pages take too long and nobody can say why, so every fix is a guess that may not help.

You failed Core Web Vitals

Google flags poor LCP or CLS and you need to know exactly what is driving the scores down.

Bounce rate is climbing

Visitors leave before pages load and you suspect speed, but you have no proof to act on.

The admin is painfully slow

Staff wait on product saves and order screens, and you need to know whether it is code, DB or hosting.

A big sale is coming

You need to know the store can handle peak traffic before the campaign, not during it.

Fixes did not stick

You paid for speed work before and it barely moved, so you want the real bottleneck found first.

You inherited the store

You took over a build you did not write and need an honest, independent read on its health.

You need to justify budget

You want evidence and a prioritised plan to take to your team before committing to optimisation spend.

Business Outcomes

What A Proper Audit Actually Gives You

An audit is not a vague health check. It hands you the evidence and the plan to act with confidence.

Real cause

You know the true bottleneck

Profiling shows exactly where time is lost, so effort goes to the issue that actually moves the numbers.

Priorities

A ranked roadmap

Findings are ordered by impact and effort, so you fix the highest-value items first, not the loudest ones.

Quick wins

Easy gains surfaced

The audit flags low-effort changes that can lift speed straight away, before any bigger work begins.

Evidence

Proof to back decisions

Hard numbers and traces you can take to your team or board to justify optimisation spend.

Benchmark

A baseline to measure against

A recorded starting point, so any later work can be proven to have actually improved things.

No waste

No money on the wrong fix

You stop paying for speculative work and spend only where the data says it will make a difference.

What We Check

Eight Layers Of Magento Performance We Audit

A real audit looks at the whole stack, because a slow store is rarely slow for just one reason.

Backend profiling

We profile PHP execution to find slow methods, heavy plugins and the code paths eating your TTFB.

Database & queries

We find slow queries, N+1 patterns, missing indexes and table bloat that drag every page down.

Indexers & cron

We check indexer modes, cron health and stuck jobs that quietly cripple catalog and cache performance.

Extension audit

We identify heavy, conflicting or abandoned modules and third-party scripts loading on every page.

Frontend & CWV

We measure Core Web Vitals and audit JS, CSS, images and render-blocking assets on real pages.

Caching & Varnish

We check full-page cache, Varnish, Redis and hit rates to see how much traffic is served from cache.

Infrastructure review

We assess server sizing, PHP-FPM, the stack and hosting to see where the environment limits speed.

Report & roadmap

We deliver a prioritised findings report with evidence, expected impact and a clear remediation plan.

Audit Depth

Quick Check, Standard Audit Or Deep Dive?

Not every store needs the same depth. A quick check is a fast triage, a standard audit covers the full stack, and a deep dive adds load testing and code-level tracing. Here is how they compare so you scope it to the decision you actually need to make.

How It Runs

How An Audit Turns A Slow Store Into A Clear Plan

An audit is only useful if it ends in decisions. Ours is built to move from symptoms to a prioritised, evidence-backed roadmap.

1

Baseline

We capture current speed, Core Web Vitals and server metrics on real pages, so we have a measured starting point.

2

Profile the stack

We profile backend, database, cache and frontend under realistic conditions to see where the time actually goes.

3

Find root causes

We trace symptoms back to their real source, separating true bottlenecks from things that only look slow.

4

Prioritise by impact

Each finding is scored on how much it costs you and how hard it is to fix, so the order is obvious.

5

Report & walk through

You get a written report and a walkthrough, so your team understands the findings and the plan, not just the scores.

Quick Answers

Straight Answers, No Sales Pitch

What do I actually get?

A written, prioritised report of what is slowing your store, with evidence for each finding, expected impact, and a clear remediation roadmap you can act on with any team.

Do you fix the issues too?

The audit is the diagnosis. We can then carry out the fixes through our speed optimization service, or hand the roadmap to your own developers, whichever you prefer.

Will it disrupt my live store?

No. Profiling and measurement are done without changing your production site. An audit observes and reports, it does not alter your store.

AI In Performance Engineering

AI In Magento Performance Audits

Performance data is huge and noisy, and finding the signal is exactly where AI helps. It spots the bottleneck in a mountain of traces, catches regressions early, and ranks findings by real impact. We apply it where it makes the audit sharper.

Bottleneck detection

Surface the slowest code paths and queries from large trace sets faster than reading them by hand.

Regression detection

Flag when a metric drifts the wrong way after a change, so slowdowns are caught before customers feel them.

Impact-based prioritisation

Rank findings by likely effect on speed and conversion so the roadmap targets what matters most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Magento Performance Audits

What is a Magento performance audit?

It is a structured investigation into why your store is slow, and it begins with measurement rather than assumption. We profile the whole stack: backend PHP, database queries, indexers and cron, caching and Varnish hit rates, extension and third-party script load, frontend assets, and the hosting environment underneath. You receive a prioritised report of what is genuinely causing the slowness, with the evidence behind each finding and a plan for what to fix first. Most slow Magento stores have several contributing causes of very different sizes, so the ranking matters as much as the list itself. The aim is to know where the time goes before spending anything on removing it.

How is an audit different from speed optimization?

An audit is the diagnosis, speed optimisation is the treatment. The audit measures, finds the real bottlenecks and hands you a ranked roadmap. Optimisation is the engineering work of removing them. We offer both, and many clients deliberately start with the audit so the optimisation budget only goes where it will change a number. It also establishes the baseline you measure against afterwards, which is the only honest way to claim an improvement later. If you already hold solid profiling data and simply need the work carried out, you can go straight to optimisation, and we will tell you when that is the sensible choice.

How do you decide which findings matter most?

By measured impact, not by how alarming something looks written down. Every finding is ranked on the time it actually costs a page, how many pages it affects, and how much work the fix involves, so the list is ordered by what will move your numbers rather than by category. That routinely puts an unglamorous fix such as an uncached block or a missing index above a long standing complaint about image sizes. We also mark the findings that cannot help until something else is fixed first, since a rendering improvement stays invisible while the server still takes four seconds to respond.

What access do you need to run the audit?

Less than most clients expect. Admin access to the store, read access to the codebase, and a way to see server level metrics, which usually means either a hosting panel login or somebody who can pull the figures for us. Where profiling is involved we ask for a staging copy rather than production. We do not need write access, deployment rights or anything that would let us change your store, and we would rather not hold them during an audit, because the value of the exercise depends on nothing shifting underneath the measurements while they are being taken.

What does the audit actually look at?

Backend PHP profiling to find slow code paths, database and query analysis including missing indexes and repeated per-row queries, indexer and cron health, extension and third-party script load, full-page cache and Varnish hit rates, image and asset delivery, Core Web Vitals on real templates, and the server and hosting environment beneath all of it. We also check the configuration that is easy to get wrong at scale, such as indexer modes, cache backends and overlapping cron schedules. A slow store almost always has more than one cause, and the cheapest fix is rarely the largest one, so we measure the whole stack before ranking anything.

My Core Web Vitals are failing. Can you find out why?

Yes. We measure Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift and Interaction to Next Paint on real templates, then trace each poor score to its cause, whether that is render-blocking assets, an oversized or wrongly lazy-loaded hero image, third-party scripts, layout shift from unsized media, or slow server response. The thresholds are 2.5 seconds, 0.1 and 200 milliseconds at the 75th percentile, and Interaction to Next Paint replaced First Input Delay in March 2024, which caught out many stores that had been passing. One caution we give every client: field data uses a 28 day rolling window, so a fix takes roughly a month to show fully.

We tried speed fixes before and they did not help. Why would this be different?

Because we measure first, and most failed speed work targets the wrong thing. Stores commonly arrive having bought more server capacity for a problem that turned out to be a single slow query, or having minified assets when the real cost was an extension issuing hundreds of requests on every page load. Profiling data shows where the time is actually spent, so effort goes to the bottleneck rather than to whichever fix is easiest to sell. We also agree the baseline and the success metric before starting, and we will say when a proposed change is not worth doing, which is what makes the ranking trustworthy.

How long does an audit take?

A focused audit is usually a matter of days. What moves the timeline is how much evidence you need rather than how large the store is: a straightforward read on the main templates and the obvious bottlenecks is quick, while a deep dive with load testing, a full query trace and a peak-traffic simulation takes longer to run and longer to interpret. Some measurements also have to sit across a real trading pattern, because a store behaves differently on a quiet Tuesday morning than during a campaign. We agree the scope, the depth and the timeline up front so nobody is paying for open-ended investigation.

Do you test how the store handles peak traffic?

In a deep-dive audit, yes. We run load tests against a staging copy that mirrors production as closely as possible, then watch where it bends first, which is usually the database, a cache that stops being effective under concurrency, or an integration that queues behind itself. This is far more useful before a sale or campaign than after one, because the failure mode you care about only appears under concurrency and cannot be found by loading pages one at a time. We report the concurrency level at which response times start to degrade and what fails first, so capacity planning rests on a number.

Can you audit a store you did not build?

Yes, and most of our audits are exactly that. An independent read on an inherited or third-party build is often the whole point: you get an assessment from someone with no stake in defending the decisions already made, and no incentive to describe the existing work as either better or worse than it is. We do not need the original team's cooperation, only the code, a staging copy and access to hosting metrics. If the current developers are still engaged we are happy to share findings with them directly, since the report is meant to be actionable rather than adversarial.

How long do the findings stay valid?

The diagnosis holds for months rather than weeks, provided the store is not changing much. Architecture, indexing, caching strategy and hosting shape do not drift on their own. What does age is anything tied to traffic volume or data growth, since a query that was acceptable against fifty thousand orders can be the bottleneck against half a million, and third party scripts get added by marketing without anyone treating it as a code change. If a year passes, or you have shipped a major release or a replatform, the numbers are worth taking again before acting on the older ranking.

Is an audit worth it if I already know my store is slow?

Yes, because knowing that it is slow is not the same as knowing why, and the gap between those two is where budgets disappear. The audit converts a vague sense of slowness into a specific, ranked list of causes with the evidence attached, so you can fund the work that will move the number and decline the work that will not. It also gives you the baseline needed to prove the improvement afterwards. It frequently reframes the problem too: stores that arrive convinced they need new hosting often turn out to have a cache hit rate issue that costs a fraction as much to resolve.
