Magento Payment Gateway Integration

Magento Checkouts That Take The Payment The First Time

A payment gateway is where a browsing shopper turns into paid revenue, or quietly leaves. We connect Magento to the gateways your customers trust, tune the checkout for local methods and currencies, and build in 3DS, fraud screening and retry logic so good orders go through and bad ones do not. Fewer declines, cleaner settlements, less manual reconciliation.

Who Needs This

Eight Signs Your Magento Checkout Is Leaking Revenue

If two or three of these sound familiar, the payment layer, not the traffic, is where your next revenue lift is hiding.

Cards get declined

Good customers see a failed payment for no clear reason and never come back to try again.

Checkout feels slow

The payment step reloads, redirects and stalls, and shoppers abandon on the last screen.

One country, one method

You want to sell abroad but only support a single card processor and a single currency.

Fraud slips through

Chargebacks keep landing because nothing screens risky orders before they are captured.

No saved cards

Returning buyers re-enter full card details every time, so repeat purchases stall.

Subscriptions are manual

Recurring billing is chased by hand instead of charging cards automatically on schedule.

Settlement is a spreadsheet

Finance reconciles gateway payouts against orders manually at the end of every month.

Compliance is unclear

Nobody is sure whether the current setup meets PCI-DSS or the SCA rules in your markets.

Business Outcomes

What A Properly Integrated Gateway Actually Changes

Payment work is not a plugin install. Done right, it moves the numbers your finance team already watches.

Higher approval

More good orders clear

Smart retries, correct 3DS flows and the right local acquirer mean fewer false declines on genuine cards.

Faster checkout

Fewer drop-offs at pay

Embedded, in-page payment fields remove the redirect and reload that lose shoppers on the final step.

Global reach

Sell in more markets

Local cards, wallets and currencies let buyers pay the way they expect, wherever they are.

Lower fraud

Chargebacks come down

Rules and risk scoring flag suspicious orders before capture, protecting margin and your acquirer standing.

Repeat revenue

One-click and recurring

Saved cards and automated subscription billing turn first orders into predictable, ongoing revenue.

Less admin

Reconciliation that matches

Gateway payouts map back to Magento orders automatically, so finance stops closing the month by hand.

What We Do

Eight Areas Of Magento Payment Work We Handle

From choosing the right gateway to recovering failed payments, the whole payment journey, built and tested on your store.

Gateway integration

Stripe, PayPal, Razorpay, Authorize.Net, Braintree, PayU and regional acquirers, integrated natively into Magento.

Multi-currency & methods

Local cards, UPI, wallets, bank transfer and buy-now-pay-later, priced and displayed per market.

Saved cards & one-click

Tokenised vaulting so returning customers pay in one click without you ever touching raw card data.

3DS2, SCA & PCI

Strong customer authentication and PCI-DSS aligned handling so you stay compliant without killing conversion.

Fraud & risk screening

Rules, velocity checks and third-party risk scoring that block bad orders before they are captured.

Subscriptions & recurring

Automated recurring billing, trials, upgrades and dunning for membership and replenishment models.

Failed-payment recovery

Smart retries, alternate-method prompts and recovery emails that win back orders a decline would have lost.

Checkout UX & settlement

In-page payment fields, cleaner error messages, and payout-to-order reconciliation back into Magento.

Integration Choice

Hosted, Embedded Or Custom? Match It To Your Risk And UX

There is no single right answer. The best choice depends on how much control you need over the checkout, your compliance appetite and your team. Here is how the three common approaches compare, so the decision is made on facts, not on whatever a plugin defaulted to.

Hosted keeps PCI scope smallest Embedded keeps buyers on your store Custom fits complex, multi-gateway needs

How It Ships

How A Gateway Goes Live Without A Single Lost Order

Payments are the one area you cannot afford to break in production. We ship on a sandbox-first path with a staged, reversible cutover.

1

Sandbox build

We integrate and configure the gateway in a sandbox against your real checkout, with test cards for every scenario.

2

Scenario testing

Success, decline, 3DS challenge, partial refund, void, chargeback and currency edge cases are all exercised before go-live.

3

Compliance check

We confirm PCI scope, SCA behaviour and webhook signature validation so nothing sensitive touches your servers.

4

Controlled go-live

The new method is enabled alongside the old one, monitored on live orders, then made primary once approval rates hold.

5

Watch & tune

We track approval rate, 3DS friction and failed captures for the first weeks and tune rules to lift clearance.

Quick Answers

Straight Answers, No Sales Pitch

Which gateway is best for Magento?

The one your customers already trust in your main markets. We match gateway, acquirer and methods to where you sell rather than to a default.

Will this pass PCI-DSS?

We use tokenised, hosted or embedded fields so raw card data never lands on your server, keeping your PCI scope as small as possible.

Can we take more than one gateway?

Yes. We can route by country, currency or method, and fail over to a backup so a single processor outage does not stop sales.

STAGE 01

Payment Audit

We review your current methods, decline reasons, chargeback rate and reconciliation to find where money and time leak.

STAGE 02

Gateway Plan

We recommend gateways, methods and an integration style per market, with the compliance and fee implications spelled out.

STAGE 03

Sandbox Build

We build the integration against your real checkout in a sandbox, wiring webhooks, capture, refund and vaulting.

STAGE 04

Test & Cutover

Every payment scenario is tested, then we go live in a controlled, reversible way with the old method as a safety net.

AI In Payment Engineering

AI In Magento Payments

Modern payment problems, false declines, fraud and churn, are pattern problems, and pattern problems are where AI earns its place. We apply it where it measurably helps, not as a bolt-on.

Fraud-pattern detection

Models learn the shape of your normal orders and flag the outliers, cutting chargebacks without blocking good buyers.

Smart payment routing

Route each transaction to the acquirer most likely to approve it, lifting clearance on genuine cards.

Churn prediction on failures

Predict which failed or lapsing subscription payments are recoverable and time the retry and outreach accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Magento Payment Integration

How long does a gateway integration take?

A standard gateway with a supported Magento extension usually takes a few days to a week, most of which is configuration and testing rather than development. One needing custom work, or involving subscriptions, saved cards, multiple currencies or split payouts, runs to two or three weeks. What extends it is rarely our side. It is waiting on merchant account approval, which sits with the acquirer and can take weeks, and getting sandbox credentials issued. We ask you to start those applications at the beginning rather than once development is finished, because that ordering decides whether the integration is ready on time.

What if our processor has no ready-made Magento module?

We build the integration directly against their API, which is normal work rather than an exception. Magento has a defined payment method structure, so a custom implementation satisfies the same interfaces the packaged ones do and behaves consistently in checkout, in the admin and through order processing. What we check first is what the processor genuinely supports, since a provider with no documented API, no sandbox, or no support for the authorization and capture flow you need is a problem no amount of code solves. Where that is the case we say so early, because switching provider is cheaper before the build than after.

What testing do you do before taking real payments?

More than the sandbox, because sandboxes flatter you. We work through the full set in the test environment first: a successful payment, a declined card, an expired card, insufficient funds, a 3DS challenge, a timeout part way through authorization, refunds both partial and full, and cancellation. Then before go live we run real transactions with real cards at the smallest amount the processor allows, and refund them, because the only way to be sure the live account is configured correctly is to use it. We also confirm the order state in Magento matches the state at the processor in each case.

Do you support 3DS2 and SCA for European and UK customers?

Yes. We implement 3D Secure 2 and Strong Customer Authentication correctly, using frictionless flows where risk is low so genuine buyers are not pushed through an extra step unless the transaction requires it. Done badly, SCA becomes a conversion problem disguised as a compliance one, because every unnecessary challenge is a checkout a customer can abandon, and Baymard puts average cart abandonment at 70.19 percent before you add any friction at all. Done properly, the data your store sends with the authentication request is what earns the frictionless outcome, so we make sure that payload is complete rather than minimal.

Can returning customers save their card for one-click checkout?

Yes. We set up tokenized card vaulting so repeat buyers can pay in one click without you ever storing real card numbers, which is a common lift for stores with a high proportion of returning customers. The token belongs to the gateway, and that is worth knowing before you choose one, because vaulted tokens are not automatically portable to a different processor later. Where portability matters we raise it at selection time and check what a migration path would involve. We also make saving a card an explicit choice rather than a default, since a surprise stored credential damages trust more than it saves clicks.

Can you set up subscriptions or recurring billing in Magento?

We build automated recurring billing for memberships, replenishment and subscription products, including trials, upgrades and dunning for failed renewals, using the recurring capabilities of gateways such as Stripe or a dedicated subscription module. The part that decides whether a subscription business works is dunning, not signup. Cards expire, get reissued after fraud and fail on a routine basis, so a meaningful share of involuntary churn is recoverable purely through account updater services, sensible retry timing and clear customer emails. We also make cancellation genuinely self-service, because a subscription that is hard to cancel generates chargebacks, and those cost more than the retained revenue.

How do you reduce card declines and chargebacks?

We combine correct 3DS flows, smart retries and the right acquirer to lift approvals on genuine cards, then add fraud rules, velocity checks and risk scoring to block suspicious orders before capture. Together those usually raise clearance on good orders while bringing chargebacks down. The honest framing is that this is a tuning exercise with a real tradeoff, not a setting you switch on. Any rule strict enough to stop a fraudster also declines some genuine customers, so we start from your own decline and chargeback data, change one variable at a time, and measure both sides rather than the number that is easiest to report.

What happens to orders when a payment fails?

We build failed-payment recovery: smart retries at better-timed intervals, prompts to try an alternative method, and recovery emails. That wins back a share of orders a plain decline would have lost outright. The first opportunity is inside the checkout itself, in the seconds after the failure, because a customer who is still on the page and offered a working alternative will often complete immediately, while one who has closed the tab has to be persuaded back. So we handle the decline message properly first, tell the shopper what to do next in plain language, and treat the follow-up email as the second chance.

Can you add local payment methods and multiple currencies?

Yes. Local cards, wallets, UPI, bank transfer and buy-now-pay-later options can be presented per market, priced and displayed in the shopper's local currency, so buyers pay the way they expect wherever they are. This matters more than a feature list suggests, because in several markets the method people default to is not a card at all, and a checkout offering only cards reads as a foreign site. The other half is presentation. Showing the final price in local currency, with any conversion and duty made clear before the last step, addresses unexpected extra costs, the most cited reason shoppers abandon a cart.

Will switching gateways disrupt my live store?

No. Every payment scenario is built and tested in a sandbox first, then released in a controlled, reversible way with the existing method kept as a safety net until the new one has proven itself on real orders. The goal is zero lost orders during cutover. Sandbox testing has limits worth naming, since it verifies the code paths but not your acquirer's real risk behavior, so the first live period is watched closely and we keep the ability to route back within minutes. We also plan the switch away from your peak trading window, because a cutover during a campaign removes the option of taking your time.

Do payouts reconcile back to Magento orders?

We map gateway settlements and payouts back to the matching Magento orders so your finance team can reconcile automatically instead of matching spreadsheets by hand at month end. This is where accuracy quietly slips on a lot of stores, because a payout is a net figure covering many orders minus fees, refunds and chargebacks, and it lands on a different day from the transactions inside it. Without a mapping, finance either reconciles at a summary level and misses discrepancies, or spends days each month rebuilding the detail. We set it up once so the answer becomes a report rather than an investigation.

Do you support the store after the gateway goes live?

Yes. We monitor approval rate, 3DS friction and failed captures after launch and tune the rules to keep clearance high, ongoing support is available, and the wider Magento team is on hand when payments touch catalog, tax or shipping. That last point is why payment work rarely stays purely payment work. A capture failing on one product line often turns out to be a tax rule, a shipping method or a stock reservation behaving unexpectedly rather than the gateway at all, and being able to follow the problem into the rest of the store is what actually gets it closed.
