Staff augmentation for US teams

Magento Developer For Hire, Working US Hours

Add a senior Magento 2 or Adobe Commerce developer to your team for a roadmap, a backlog, or the support and maintenance nobody in house has time for. They join your standups, your Slack and your Jira, and they overlap with Eastern, Central and Pacific time.

Is augmentation the right call

Hire a developer when the work is ongoing. Hire a project when it is not.

Most US companies that ask us for a Magento developer already have a store, an internal lead of some kind, and a queue of work that never gets shorter. Extension updates, checkout tweaks, an ERP field that stopped syncing, a quarterly security patch, and a feature marketing asked for in the spring. That is augmentation territory: the value comes from one person learning your codebase and staying on it.

If what you actually have is one defined build, a replatform or a version upgrade with a clear finish line, a fixed-scope project is usually cheaper and easier to govern. We will say so on the first call. Our Magento development company page for US brands covers that route.

The honest failure mode of augmentation is a developer dropped into a store with no documentation, no staging environment and no one to ask. Where that is the situation, the first two weeks go into setting up staging and deployment properly, because every hour after that is worth more.

Typical reasons US teams hire

  • The in-house developer left and the store has been in maintenance-only mode since
  • A US agency retainer costs more than the volume of work justifies
  • Marketing wants features faster than one developer can ship them
  • Security patches and version upgrades keep slipping by a quarter
  • A Hyva or headless frontend is planned and nobody on staff has built one
  • An ERP, PIM or 3PL integration needs someone who understands Magento’s queue system
Engagement models

Three ways to hire Magento developers in the USA market

Pick by how much Magento work you have each month, not by what sounds most committed. All three run month to month and you can move between them.

Dedicated full-timeDedicated part-timeHourly support and maintenance
Best fitAn active roadmap, a Hyva or headless build, or a store where Magento is the main revenue systemA steady backlog that does not fill a full week, often alongside an in-house leadPatching, extension updates, bug fixes and small features on a store that is mostly stable
Who works on itOne named developer, exclusively on your storeOne named developer with fixed days or hours reserved for youA small pool that already knows your store, so tickets are not waiting on one person
US hours overlapDaily overlap agreed per time zone, joins your standupOverlap on the reserved daysAgreed response windows, plus planned patch and deploy windows
How work is trackedYour Jira or Linear, your sprint rhythmYour tracker, weekly priority callTicket queue with a monthly summary of what was done
CommitmentMonth to monthMonth to monthMonth to month, hours billed as worked

For fixed-scope builds with a defined deliverable we quote a project instead. Pricing for any of these depends on seniority, hours and stack, so we send a written number after the first call rather than publishing a rate card that would be wrong for most stores. If what you need is mainly retained upkeep, our Magento support and maintenance services page describes that service on its own.

Skills matrix

What the developer you hire actually knows

Magento skills are not interchangeable. A strong Luma theme developer can be lost in a GraphQL-driven headless build, so we match on the specific layers your store uses.

LayerWhat we coverWhere it matters on your store
PlatformMagento 2 Open Source and Adobe Commerce, B2B module, multi-store and multi-website setupsEdition-specific features like shared catalogs and staging only exist on Adobe Commerce
BackendPHP 8, dependency injection, plugins and observers, service contracts, message queues, cronCustom modules that survive upgrades instead of breaking on every patch
FrontendHyva themes, Luma, PWA Studio, Alpine.js and Tailwind on HyvaHyva is the practical route to a fast storefront on most stores today
APIsREST and GraphQL, custom resolvers, headless storefrontsERP, PIM, OMS and mobile app integrations, see GraphQL developers
Search and cachingOpenSearch, Varnish full-page cache, Redis sessions and cacheMost slow Magento stores are a caching or indexing problem, not a hosting one

How vetting works

We test on Magento code, then you test on yours

Every developer is assessed on real Magento work: writing a plugin against a core class, tracing a dependency injection problem, and explaining why a layout change belongs in a theme and not in a module. A generic coding test tells you very little about whether someone will break your checkout.

The second test is yours. Before any longer engagement starts, the developer does a small paid trial task on your actual codebase. You see their pull request, their commit messages and how they ask questions. If it is not the right fit at that stage or any later one, we replace them at no extra cost, with written handover notes so the next person does not start from zero.

We do not claim Adobe certification for every developer, because it would not be true and it is not what decides quality. We tell you each candidate’s actual experience instead.

Discovery call

In your hours. Edition, frontend, integrations, and the backlog you want cleared.

Developer match

A shortlist whose project history matches your stack, not whoever happens to be free.

Paid trial task

Real work on your repo, reviewed by you before committing further.

Onboarding

Repo, staging, tracker and Slack access. Most engagements start within a week.

Ongoing delivery

Your sprint rhythm, with our team behind the developer for review and cover.

Working across the Atlantic and Pacific

What an India-based developer on your US team looks like day to day

We are an India-based team with offices in Vadodara and Bengaluru, and we do not pretend otherwise. What we arrange is overlap where it counts.

Overlap by time zone

East Coast teams get the most shared hours, usually the whole US morning. Central and Pacific teams get a fixed daily overlap window for standups and review. Either way the developer works while you sleep, so a morning review finds work waiting for you.

Deploys when both sides are awake

Production deploys, security patches and cache changes are scheduled inside the overlap window, never at the end of our day. A failed deploy is cheap to fix when both teams are online and expensive when one is asleep.

You own the code, in writing

NDA and IP assignment sit in the agreement before any access is granted. Work lives in your repository from the first commit, follows Magento conventions, and uses no tooling only we can run, so another team could take it over without a rewrite.

Proof

Magento work our developers have shipped

We publish 37 case studies. None of them is a US client, so judge us on the work itself. These are the closest to what an augmented Magento developer spends their time on.

Frequently asked

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often.

How do I hire a Magento developer for my US business?

Book a discovery call in your own time zone, tell us your Magento edition, frontend and backlog, and we shortlist developers whose past projects match that stack. The chosen developer then completes a small paid trial task on your real codebase so you can review their pull request before committing. Once you are happy, we set up repository, staging, tracker and Slack access, and most engagements start within a week of the first call. There is no fixed-term contract, so the engagement runs month to month and you can scale it up, down or stop.

What does a Magento developer for hire actually do day to day?

A hired Magento developer works through your backlog as a member of your team: custom module work, checkout and catalog changes, extension updates, integration fixes, security patches and version upgrades. They join your standup during the overlap window, take tickets from your Jira or Linear board, open pull requests in your repository and deploy through your pipeline. On a well-run engagement they also leave the store easier to work on than they found it, with documented modules, a working staging environment and fewer overrides of core behaviour that break on the next upgrade.

Which US time zones can your Magento developers cover?

Our developers overlap with Eastern, Central and Pacific time every working day. East Coast teams get the most shared hours, typically the whole US morning, while Central and Pacific teams get a fixed daily window for standups, code review and questions. We are an India-based team in Vadodara and Bengaluru, so the rest of the developer's day happens while your office is closed, which means a morning review usually finds finished work waiting. Production deploys and security patches are always scheduled inside the overlap window so both teams are online if anything goes wrong.

What engagement models can I choose from?

There are three: a dedicated full-time developer who works only on your store, a dedicated part-time developer with reserved days or hours each week, and hourly support and maintenance billed as worked. Full-time suits an active roadmap or a Hyva or headless build. Part-time suits a steady backlog that does not fill a week. Hourly suits a stable store that mainly needs patching, extension updates and small fixes. All three run month to month, and you can move between them as the workload changes. For one well-defined build we usually quote a fixed-scope project instead.

How much does it cost to hire a Magento developer?

Cost depends on the developer's seniority, the hours per month and the stack involved, so we send a written quote after the discovery call instead of publishing a single rate that would be wrong for most stores. A part-time or hourly support arrangement costs less than a full-time dedicated developer, and a Hyva, headless or Adobe Commerce Cloud engagement needs more senior people than routine maintenance. What we can say is that nothing is billed without agreement: scope and rate are confirmed in writing before work starts, and hourly work is billed only for hours actually worked.

How do you vet your Magento developers?

We assess developers on real Magento problems rather than a generic coding test. That means writing a plugin against a core class, tracing a dependency injection issue, explaining where a layout change belongs, and reasoning about caching and indexing. Then you run the second test yourself: a small paid trial task on your own codebase, where you see how they write code, commit, and ask questions. We do not claim every developer holds an Adobe certification. Instead we tell you each candidate's actual Magento experience, which is what decides whether they will be productive on your store.

What happens if the developer is not the right fit?

We replace them at no extra cost. Because every developer works with our wider Magento team behind them, the replacement is briefed with written handover notes covering the codebase, open tickets and decisions made so far, so they do not start from nothing. We would rather hear about a poor fit in the first week than have you tolerate it for a quarter. In practice most fit issues are about communication style or seniority rather than technical skill, and naming them early usually resolves them quickly, sometimes without a change of developer at all.

Do I own the code a hired Magento developer writes?

Yes, you own all of it. An NDA and IP assignment are signed before the developer gets any access to your systems, and the work lives in your repository from the very first commit rather than being handed over at the end. We follow Magento's own conventions, document custom modules, and avoid tooling that only we can run. The practical test we hold ourselves to is whether another agency or an in-house hire could take the codebase over without a rewrite, which is a stricter bar than simply delivering files when the engagement ends.

Can you handle Magento support and maintenance services for a US store?

Yes. Support and maintenance is one of the most common reasons US companies hire through us. It covers security patches, version upgrades, extension updates, bug fixes, monitoring and small features, usually on the hourly model with agreed response windows during US hours. Patch and deploy windows are planned in advance, including code freezes around peak trading like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. If you want support as a defined retained service rather than an augmented developer, our Magento support page describes that option and we can recommend whichever suits the store.

Can a hired developer handle Magento customization and integrations?

Yes. Magento customization is core to the role: custom modules, checkout changes, pricing and promotion rules, admin workflows, and B2B features such as shared catalogs and quote requests on Adobe Commerce. Integrations are the other large share of the work, connecting Magento to ERP, PIM, OMS, 3PL and payment systems through REST, GraphQL and the message queue. We match the developer to the layers your store actually uses, because a strong theme developer is not automatically strong at asynchronous integrations, and a mismatch there wastes the first few weeks.

Is hiring an offshore Magento developer risky for a US company?

It can be when it means one freelancer with no backup, no code review and no written agreement. The risks are a single point of failure, code only one person understands, and weak IP protection. Our model is built to remove those: the developer is backed by a full Magento team for review and cover, NDA and IP assignment are signed first, code lives in your repository, and a paid trial task comes before any commitment. The remaining trade-off is time zone, which we handle with a fixed daily overlap and deploys scheduled only when both teams are online.
