Fashion and apparel, USA

Fashion & Apparel Ecommerce Development With A Shopify Plus Agency

For US labels selling abroad and international labels selling into the US. Drops that hold under load, duties settled at checkout instead of at the door, size guidance that cuts returns, and one catalog serving several markets.

Cross-border D2C

Two directions, two different sets of problems

A New York label shipping to London and a Milan label shipping to Los Angeles use the same platform features and trip over completely different things.

US brand selling internationallyInternational brand selling into the US
Duties and taxesDelivered duty paid (DDP) at checkout so EU, UK and Canadian customers are not billed on deliveryUS sales tax by state and nexus, plus import duty on goods shipped from abroad
PricingMarket-specific price lists, rounding rules per currency, and deciding whether to absorb VATUS dollar pricing that reads as local, not converted, and promotions timed to US calendars
SizingUS sizes converted to UK, EU and AU charts, with fit notes on the product pageEU or Asian sizing translated into US sizes shoppers trust
ReturnsLocal return addresses or a returns partner, so a return is not an international parcelA US returns address, because US shoppers expect free and easy returns as standard
FulfilmentShip from the US, or from a 3PL inside the market once volume justifies itA US 3PL for speed, or cross-border shipping with honest delivery dates
SEOSubfolders or domains per market with correct hreflang, so versions do not competeContent written for US search terms: “pants”, not “trousers”

Most of this is configuration on Shopify Plus. The work is deciding it correctly before launch, because changing a market structure after you rank in it costs traffic. Our global fashion and apparel practice covers the wider brand and storefront side.

Drops and launches

A drop is a load test with your revenue attached

Shopify’s infrastructure rarely falls over during a drop. What breaks is everything you added: a heavy app script that runs on every page view, an inventory sync that lags so you oversell, a queue that lets bots through before real customers, a discount that stacks in a way nobody tested.

We treat a drop as a runbook. Launchpad schedules the product release, price changes and theme swap. The apps that do not need to run during the drop are switched off. Bot protection and per-customer limits are set in checkout through Functions. Someone from our team is watching orders live, in your time zone.

Our pre-drop checklist

  • Every app script audited for page weight and removed if not needed that day
  • Inventory source of truth confirmed, with the ERP or 3PL sync frequency tested
  • Per-customer purchase limits and bot rules applied at checkout
  • Launchpad event rehearsed on a development store
  • Discount stacking tested against every live code
  • A rollback theme and a named person to trigger it
Returns are a product problem

Cut returns at the product page, not in the warehouse

Size guidance per market

Size charts stored as structured data, converted per market and shown next to the size selector, not buried in a modal. Fit notes like “runs small” belong on the product, written by someone who has worn it.

Exchanges before refunds

A returns flow that offers the next size or store credit first keeps the revenue. We integrate returns platforms such as Loop or build a lighter custom flow when the volume does not justify another subscription.

Return reasons you can act on

Reason codes tied to the product and size, reported weekly. When one style keeps coming back as “too small”, the chart or the copy changes, not just the stock count.

Speed benchmarks

The numbers a fashion store should hit on a mid-range phone

Fashion pages are heavy by nature: large photography, swatches, video and a size selector that reacts to stock. We hold every build to Google’s Core Web Vitals thresholds, measured on real visitors at the 75th percentile, not on a desktop test run from the office.

MetricGoogle’s “good” thresholdWhat usually breaks it on a fashion storeWhat we do about it
Largest Contentful Paint2.5 seconds or lessAn uncompressed hero image or a lookbook carousel loading every slide up frontResponsive WebP or AVIF images, the first slide preloaded, the rest lazy loaded
Interaction to Next Paint200 milliseconds or lessReview, quiz, upsell and tracking apps all running scripts on the product pageAn app audit before launch, and scripts deferred until the shopper interacts
Cumulative Layout Shift0.1 or lessSwatches, badges and “only 2 left” banners that load late and push the size selector downReserved space for every late element, so the button a shopper aims for stays put

When the theme cannot get there without stripping out what makes the brand look like itself, that is when a headless storefront earns its cost. Powerlook is the example: the brand moved to a headless Magento 2 frontend so its catalogue and lookbooks could stay rich without slowing the phone experience down.

Choosing the platform

Shopify Plus for most labels, Magento or headless for some

For a fashion brand selling direct to consumers in a handful of markets, Shopify Plus is our default. Markets handles currency and duties, Launchpad handles drops, and your merchandising team can run it without a developer on call.

We recommend Magento 2 when wholesale and retail share one complex catalog, and a headless storefront when the brand experience needs editorial layouts a theme cannot deliver. Most of our published fashion work is Magento 2 for exactly those reasons.

Shopify Plus

D2C labels, frequent drops, lean teams, several markets from one store.

Magento 2

Large catalogs, wholesale and retail together, complex pricing and multi-warehouse stock.

Headless

Lookbook-led brands where content and commerce mix on every page and speed is a brand value.

Frequently asked

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often.

Why use a Shopify Plus agency for a fashion brand?

Fashion stores hit the limits of standard Shopify faster than most categories. Drops create traffic spikes that expose slow apps, cross-border selling needs Markets with duties at checkout, wholesale and retail often share one catalog, and returns eat margin unless the product page does its job. A Shopify Plus agency builds for those specific pressures: Launchpad-scheduled releases, checkout rules through Functions, B2B price lists for stockists, and market-by-market pricing. We work with US labels selling abroad and international labels selling into the US, from India with working overlap across US time zones, and we recommend Plus only when your volume and model justify it.

How do you handle duties and taxes for cross-border fashion orders?

For US brands shipping abroad we usually recommend delivered duty paid, where duties and import taxes are calculated and collected at checkout. Shopify Markets supports this, and it removes the surprise bill on delivery that causes refused parcels and chargebacks. For international brands selling into the US, the concern shifts to US sales tax by state, economic nexus thresholds and import duty on goods shipped from abroad. We configure the platform side, integrate with your tax and shipping providers, and test real baskets for each market before launch. We are not tax advisers, so your accountant confirms the obligations and we build them in.

How can our store reduce clothing returns?

Most apparel returns are about fit, so the product page is where you win or lose. We store size charts as structured data, convert them for each market, and show them next to the size selector rather than in a hidden pop-up. Fit notes written by someone who has worn the garment help more than generic size tables. We also build returns flows that offer an exchange or store credit before a refund, and we tie return reason codes to product and size so a style that keeps coming back as too small gets its chart or description fixed quickly.

Can Shopify Plus handle limited drops and flash sales?

Yes. Shopify's own infrastructure copes with drop traffic well; what usually fails is what you have added on top. Heavy app scripts, slow inventory syncs that let you oversell, and discounts that stack in ways nobody tested are the common culprits. We run each drop as a checklist: Launchpad schedules the release and price changes, non-essential apps are turned off, per-customer limits and bot rules are set at checkout through Functions, and the release is rehearsed on a development store. Someone from our team watches orders live during the drop, in your time zone, with a rollback theme ready if it is needed.

Should a fashion brand choose Shopify Plus or Magento?

For a direct to consumer label selling in a handful of markets with a lean team, Shopify Plus is usually the better choice because it is quicker to launch and cheaper to run, and your merchandisers can manage it without developers. Magento 2 makes sense when wholesale and retail share one large, complex catalog, when pricing rules are intricate, or when stock sits in several warehouses. Most of our published fashion case studies are Magento 2 builds for those reasons. We will recommend the platform that fits your model after looking at your catalog and channels, not the one that produces the bigger project.

Do you have fashion case studies from US brands?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Our 37 published case studies include several fashion and apparel builds, such as Powerlook, Africa Fashion House, Knectt, Myesuq, Cyber-Mart and Faye, but none of them is a US brand and most are on Magento 2. They are useful for seeing how we handle large variant catalogs, merchandising and peak traffic. For US-specific work we are happy to walk through how a comparable build would run for your brand, and to share references from past clients in a call once there is a real project to discuss.

How do you set up Shopify Markets for a clothing brand?

We start with the structure: which countries get their own market, whether they share a catalog, and whether each market lives in a subfolder or on its own domain. That choice affects SEO, so we implement hreflang correctly from launch and make sure versions do not compete in search. Then we set market pricing and rounding rules, local currencies and payment methods, duties at checkout, translated content where needed, and sizing converted for each market. We also check that shipping promises are honest for every destination, because delivery time is often the deciding factor for a first cross-border fashion order.

Can you connect our store to wholesale and stockist accounts?

Yes. Many fashion brands sell direct and to boutiques at the same time. On Shopify Plus we use B2B company accounts so stockists log in, see their own catalog and price list, order in size runs and pay on agreed terms, all from the same store as your consumers. On Magento 2 we build the equivalent with customer groups, shared catalogs and quote workflows. In both cases we connect orders and stock to your ERP or inventory system, so a wholesale order and a consumer order never both claim the last units of a size.

How long does a fashion ecommerce build take?

It depends on what you already have. A store audit and fixes before a season launch takes two to three weeks. A new Shopify Plus build or a replatform with a few markets typically runs six to twelve weeks. A headless or Magento 2 build with wholesale and several integrations is longer and is scoped in phases. We plan backwards from your collection calendar, because a store launched the week after your main drop has missed its window. Once we have your catalog size, markets and integrations, we give you a fixed scope with dates that do not move without your approval.

Can you migrate our fashion store to Shopify Plus without losing SEO?

Yes. We map every product, collection and content URL from the old platform to the new one and set up 301 redirects before launch, not after. Variant structures often differ between platforms, so we plan how size and colour options map and keep product URLs stable wherever possible. Metadata, image alt text and structured data move with the content. After launch we monitor crawl errors and rankings for the key collection pages daily for the first few weeks. Customer accounts, order history and gift card balances migrate too, so returning customers do not notice anything except a faster store.

Do you work with brands outside the US selling into America?

Yes, this is one of the two directions this page is built around. International labels entering the US need US dollar pricing that looks local rather than converted, a US returns address because US shoppers expect easy returns, state sales tax handling, and content written for US search terms. Fulfilment usually moves from cross-border shipping to a US 3PL once volume justifies it, and we build the integration either way. We have delivered projects into 7 countries, and we work with overlap across US time zones and European mornings, which suits brands managing both sides.

Who is the best Shopify Plus agency for a fashion brand?

There is no single best agency, only the best fit for your catalogue, markets and team. Compare agencies on four things: apparel stores they can show you live, experience with drops and traffic spikes, cross-border setup with Shopify Markets and duties at checkout, and how they keep product pages fast with heavy photography. Ask every shortlisted agency for named fashion clients and what was built for them. Ours include Powerlook, a menswear brand moved to a headless Magento 2 storefront over six months, and Regal Fabric Gallery, a luxury fabric store on Magento 2 that sells worldwide. We are an India-based team, so the other question to ask is how many working hours overlap with yours.
