Frequently asked

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often.

Does personalising content improve search rankings?

No, and this is the correction the article most needs. Googlebot crawls your page as an anonymous first time visitor with no history, no session and no stored preferences, so it only ever sees the default version. Personalised recommendations, dynamic landing pages and tailored messaging are therefore invisible to ranking systems. They are strong conversion tools and should be judged as such. The practical rule that follows is important: whatever a brand new anonymous visitor sees is the version being indexed, so it must be complete on its own.

Then why personalise at all?

Because it works on revenue, which is a better reason than rankings. Recommending genuinely relevant products raises average order value, surfacing recently viewed items shortens the path back to a decision, and remembering size, location or previous purchases removes friction from repeat buying. Those effects show up in conversion rate and repeat purchase rate, not in Search Console. Set the measurement up accordingly and you will get an honest read on whether the investment pays, rather than trying to attribute ranking movements to a system search engines cannot see.

Is chatbot content crawlable and indexable?

Usually not. Chat responses are generated on demand, rendered by JavaScript after user interaction, and often served from a third party widget on a different domain. None of that produces a URL a crawler can reach, so the answers your bot gives thousands of customers contribute nothing to search visibility. This is the single largest missed opportunity in most chatbot deployments, and the fix is straightforward: treat the transcript log as a content source and publish the good answers as real pages.

Can dynamic content create a cloaking problem?

It can, and the boundary is clearer than people assume. Serving different content based on the visitor's location, device or history is fine. Serving different content specifically because you detected a search engine crawler is cloaking, and it carries a manual action risk. The safe implementation is to vary content on signals available to any visitor, never on user agent, and to make sure that if you fetch your page as Googlebot through Search Console's URL Inspection tool, what comes back is genuinely what a human anonymous visitor would see.

Are engagement metrics like bounce rate a ranking factor?

Google has consistently said it does not use Google Analytics metrics such as bounce rate or time on page as ranking signals, and articles claiming that lower bounce rates lift rankings are asserting a mechanism Google denies. What is true is that the same qualities which reduce bounce, namely a fast page that answers the question the visitor arrived with, are the qualities Google's systems do try to reward. Optimise for the underlying experience and let the metric follow rather than treating the metric as the target.

What does help a page match search intent?

Answering the actual questions on the page, in the page source, where they can be crawled. Mine your own data for these: site search queries with no results, support tickets, chatbot transcripts and the People Also Ask box for your target terms. Then write direct, self contained answers of roughly a hundred words into the relevant pages. That single practice does more for intent matching than any personalisation layer, because it puts the answer where both the visitor and the crawler can find it.

Do AI chatbots help us get cited by AI search?

Not directly. Assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews cite crawlable published pages, not the widget on your site, which they cannot access. What earns citation is content on your own domain that states facts plainly, in short self contained passages, with specifics a summariser can quote without hedging. Adobe Analytics reported in May 2026 that AI referred traffic to US retail sites was up around 138 percent year on year and converted about 54 percent better than average, so the channel is worth the effort.

Should chatbot conversations become published content?

Yes, and it is the highest return idea in this whole area. Your transcript log is a continuously updated record of exactly what real customers ask, in their own words, ranked by frequency. Export the most common questions monthly, write proper answers, and publish them into the relevant product, category or service pages rather than into a single FAQ page. You get content grounded in real demand instead of keyword guesswork, and the bot gets better source material to draw on. It compounds in both directions.

Do chatbots on Google Business Profile help local SEO?

Messaging features on a business profile help responsiveness and customer experience, but there is no evidence that having them changes local ranking. Local visibility is driven by relevance, distance and prominence, which in practice means a complete and accurate profile, correct categories, consistent name address and phone data across the web, and a steady flow of genuine reviews. Automating replies to messages is a reasonable service decision. Presenting it as a ranking tactic is not, and it displaces effort from the factors that do move local results.

What kind of personalisation is safe for SEO?

Two patterns are reliably safe. First, personalise after the initial render, so the crawlable HTML contains the complete default content and personalised modules load client side afterwards. Second, keep personalisation to modules such as recommendations, recently viewed and greetings rather than to the primary content, headings and product information that define what the page is about. What to avoid is a page whose main body only assembles for known users, because the version Google indexes will be an empty shell.

How should we measure personalisation?

With a controlled test rather than a before and after comparison. Hold back a random share of traffic from the personalised experience and compare conversion rate, average order value and revenue per session between the groups over a period long enough to cover a full purchase cycle. Before and after readings are contaminated by seasonality, campaigns and product changes, which is why most reported personalisation gains are overstated. Keep the holdout permanently if you can afford it, because it is the only honest ongoing measure of what the system contributes.

Where should we start?

Start with the content that is missing rather than the technology that is missing. Pull three months of chatbot and site search queries, find the questions your pages do not answer, and answer them properly in crawlable content. That work improves organic visibility, AI citation odds and conversion simultaneously, and it costs a fraction of a personalisation platform. Add recommendation and personalisation systems afterwards, once the underlying pages are worth arriving at, since personalising a journey through weak content mainly makes the weakness easier to find.
