Adobe Commerce Development That Earns Its Licence

Adobe Commerce is a serious licence fee, so it should be doing serious work. We build, upgrade and support Adobe Commerce stores, and we will tell you plainly when Magento Open Source would serve you just as well. Most of what teams believe is licence-only is not, and knowing the difference is usually worth more than any feature list.

Two Lines Expire In August 2026

Magento Open Source 2.4.6 reaches end of support on 11 August 2026, and 2.4.5 extended support ends 12 August 2026, one day later. If you are on either line, patches stop.

2.4.6 Open SourceEnds 11 Aug 2026
2.4.6 Adobe CommerceUntil 30 Aug 2027
2.4.9 (current)Until 31 May 2029

Extended support covers licensed Adobe Commerce only. It does not extend the Open Source code base.

The Honest Answer

Do You Actually Need The Adobe Commerce Licence?

This is the first question we ask, and often the most valuable one. Here is where the licence genuinely earns its cost, and where it does not.

You probably do need it

You sell B2B with company accounts, shared catalogues, requisition lists and negotiated quotes. That suite is genuinely licence only, and rebuilding it on Open Source costs more than the licence.

You probably do need it

You want Live Search and Product Recommendations without running your own search and ML stack. Both are Adobe hosted services and are not available on Magento Open Source at any price.

You probably do need it

You need the longer support runway. Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 has extended support to 30 August 2027, while the Open Source code base on the same line stops at 11 August 2026.

You probably do not

You run a single brand, one currency and a normal catalogue. Open Source plus good hosting and a well built theme covers this, and the money is better spent on performance and merchandising.

You probably do not

You were sold the licence for features you have never switched on. We audit what you actually use before any renewal conversation, because that is the honest place to start.

You probably do not

Your main problem is speed, checkout or integrations. None of those are fixed by a licence. They are fixed by engineering work that costs the same on either edition.

What We Do

Adobe Commerce Services We Provide

Build, upgrade, secure and support. Whether you are on Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source, the engineering is the same discipline.

Implementation and replatforming

New builds and moves onto Adobe Commerce from Magento 1, Shopify, WooCommerce or a legacy custom stack, with catalogue, customer and order data migrated and reconciled rather than dumped.

Version upgrades

Getting you onto a supported line without a rushed production deploy. We work upgrade safe, so customisations move as modules and plugins rather than core edits that break at the next patch.

Security patching

Applying Adobe security patches on a schedule instead of after an incident. Sansec found roughly 75 percent of stores still unpatched a week after the CosmicSting fix (CVE-2024-34102) shipped.

Performance engineering

Core Web Vitals work against the real thresholds: LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1 at the 75th percentile. Caching, indexing, front end and query work, measured before and after.

B2B commerce

Company accounts, shared catalogues, requisition lists, quote workflows and approval rules configured properly, plus the ERP and pricing integrations that make them useful.

Integrations and APIs

ERP, PIM, WMS, payment and tax systems connected over REST, GraphQL and message queues, with retries and failure handling so a downstream outage does not silently lose orders.

Straight Answers

Adobe Commerce Questions, Answered Honestly

The questions we get asked most, answered the way we would answer them on a call.

What is the difference between Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce?

They share the same core code base, so the developer skills and most of the engineering are identical. Adobe Commerce is the licensed edition and adds Adobe hosted services and a B2B feature suite: Live Search, Product Recommendations, company accounts, shared catalogues, requisition lists, negotiated quotes and approval rules. It also carries a longer support window. Magento Open Source is free to license and covers standard B2C retail well. The practical test is whether you need the B2B suite or the Adobe hosted services, because everything else can be built on either edition for similar effort.

When does support for my Magento version end?

Adobe publishes fixed dates per line. Magento Open Source 2.4.6 reached general availability on 14 March 2023 and its standard support ends on 11 August 2026. Licensed Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 has extended support to 30 August 2027, but that extension covers the licensed edition only, not the Open Source code base. Version 2.4.5 extended support ends 12 August 2026. Later lines run to 31 May 2027 for 2.4.7, 31 May 2028 for 2.4.8 and 31 May 2029 for 2.4.9, which reached general availability on 12 May 2026.

What does a Magento upgrade actually involve?

Realistically six to fourteen weeks for a live store, not a weekend. The work is an inventory of every extension and customisation, replacing anything abandoned or incompatible, moving core edits into upgrade safe modules and plugins, then a full regression pass on checkout, payment, tax, shipping and any ERP integration. The upgrade itself is the small part. If someone quotes you a few days for a major line jump, they are quoting the command and not the testing, and the risk lands on your production store.

What is the current Adobe Commerce technology stack?

For 2.4.9 Adobe’s supported matrix is PHP 8.5, Composer 2.10, MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 12.3, OpenSearch 3, Valkey 9, RabbitMQ 4.3, Varnish 8 and nginx 1.30. Two changes catch teams out. Elasticsearch is gone from the 2.4.9 matrix, with 2.4.8 the last line to list it, and Redis has been replaced by Valkey. If your hosting or infrastructure code still provisions Elasticsearch and Redis, that has to be planned into the upgrade rather than discovered during it.

Is Adobe Commerce a good choice for B2B?

It is one of the stronger options, and B2B is where the licence most clearly pays for itself. Company accounts, shared catalogues, requisition lists, negotiated quotes and approval rules are built in rather than bolted on, which matters when your buyers have purchasing hierarchies and contract pricing. The caveat is that these features need real configuration and usually an ERP integration to be worth anything. Switching them on without connecting your pricing and stock systems produces a demo, not a working B2B channel.

What about the front end, PWA Studio or Hyva?

PWA Studio is in maintenance. Its last significant release was v14.5.0 in February 2025, and Adobe’s active investment has moved to Edge Delivery Services. That makes PWA Studio a risky choice to start a new build on today. Hyva has become the pragmatic middle path for most stores: a much lighter Luma style front end that keeps the standard Magento templating model, so your team and your extensions still work. We pick based on what your team can maintain, not on what is newest.

Plan Around These

Adobe Commerce And Magento Support Dates

Adobe publishes these dates in its lifecycle policy. Extended support applies to licensed Adobe Commerce only, never to the Magento Open Source code base.

Running past end of support does not break your store overnight. It means no more security patches, which is a compliance and insurance problem long before it is a technical one. More detail in our guide to the 2.4.6 end of support date.

How We Work

A Sequenced Path, Not A Big Bang

Upgrades and replatforms fail when they are done in one jump. We stage the work so the store stays sellable throughout.

1

Audit

We read your codebase, extension list, patch level and infrastructure before proposing anything. You get the findings whether or not you hire us.

2

Plan

A sequenced plan with a realistic window. We separate what must happen before your support date from what can follow it.

3

Build

Work happens on a staging environment that matches production, in upgrade safe modules rather than core edits, with regression tests on checkout and integrations.

4

Go live and support

A rehearsed deploy in a low traffic window, then monitoring and a patch schedule so you do not drift back out of support.

Why Teams Bring Us In

What You Get Working With Us

We have been building on this platform since the Magento 1 days, through the 2.x transition and the Adobe acquisition.

We tell you when not to buy

If your problem does not need the licence, or does not need a replatform, we say so. That has cost us work and earned us longer relationships.

Upgrade safe by default

We do not edit core. Customisations go in modules, plugins and preferences, so the next patch is a routine job instead of a rescue project.

Both editions, one team

The same engineers work across Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce, so moving between editions does not mean changing agency.

Integration experience

ERP, PIM and WMS connections are where most commerce projects actually fail. We build them with retries and reconciliation rather than optimistic one way pushes.

Measured performance work

We benchmark before and after against the Core Web Vitals thresholds. Google and Deloitte measured a 0.1 second load improvement lifting retail conversion 8.4 percent and average order value 9.2 percent.

We stay after launch

Patch schedules, monitoring and a named contact. Most of the damage we get called in to fix started as a store nobody was maintaining.

Frequently asked

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often.

Can we switch editions without rebuilding the store?

Yes. The two editions share a core code base, so moving from the free one to the licensed one is a licence change plus configuration rather than a rebuild. Your theme, custom modules and integrations carry across, and developer skills transfer completely. What you gain is the B2B suite, the Adobe hosted services and a longer support window. What you take on is the licence fee and, on Adobe Commerce Cloud, a different deployment model your team will need to learn. The work worth doing first is confirming which paid features you will genuinely switch on, because the common regret is paying for capability nobody enabled.

How far ahead should we plan an upgrade?

Start at least three to six months before your version loses support, and longer if the store is heavily customised. That sounds generous until you count what has to happen: an assessment of what is installed, chasing extension vendors for compatible releases, the build itself, then testing and a cutover window that does not collide with your trading peak. Leaving it to the final weeks removes every option except rushing, and a rushed upgrade is how stores end up with a broken checkout in their busiest month. With 2.4.6 losing standard support on 11 August 2026, anyone still on that line should be scheduling rather than researching.

Does extended support cover Magento Open Source?

No, and this is the detail most coverage gets wrong. Adobe's extended support window applies to Adobe Commerce customers, not to the Magento Open Source code base. In practice that means Open Source 2.4.6 is a hard stop on 11 August 2026, while a licensed Adobe Commerce 2.4.6 store has until 30 August 2027. If you are on Open Source and were planning around the 2027 date, you have roughly a year less runway than you think. It is worth confirming which edition you actually hold before scheduling an upgrade.

What happens if I stay on an unsupported version?

Your store keeps working. Nothing switches off on the end of support date. What stops is security patches, and that is the real exposure. Sansec found roughly 75 percent of stores were still unpatched a week after the fix for CosmicSting, CVE-2024-34102, was released, and thousands were breached. An unsupported store also becomes a compliance problem: PCI DSS expects supported software, and insurers and enterprise customers increasingly ask. The technical risk is manageable for a short window. The compliance and liability risk usually is not.

How long does an Adobe Commerce upgrade take?

For a live store with real customisations, plan six to fourteen weeks. The upgrade command itself takes minutes. The work is auditing every extension and customisation, replacing anything abandoned or incompatible, moving core edits into upgrade safe modules, and then regression testing checkout, payment, tax, shipping and any ERP integration. Data volume and the number of third party extensions drive the timeline more than the version gap does. If a quote promises a few days for a major line jump, it is pricing the command rather than the testing.

Do we need to change hosting for Magento 2.4.9?

Possibly, and it is worth checking early because these are infrastructure changes rather than code ones. The 2.4.9 matrix drops Elasticsearch in favour of OpenSearch and replaces Redis with Valkey, so a host still provisioning the older services cannot run it as supplied. It also expects PHP 8.5, MySQL 8.4 or MariaDB 12.3. Managed Magento hosts generally handle this for you. Self managed environments, and anything defined as infrastructure as code, need the new services provisioned and tested before the upgrade rather than during it. We check your current stack against the matrix at the assessment stage so it never becomes a mid-project surprise.

Which features actually require the Adobe Commerce licence?

The B2B suite is the clearest case: company accounts, shared catalogues, requisition lists, negotiated quotes and approval rules. Live Search and Product Recommendations are also licence only, because they are Adobe hosted services rather than code you can install. Beyond those, most of what teams assume is licence gated is not. Multi store, multi currency, custom pricing rules, advanced promotions and headless front ends all work on Magento Open Source. We audit which licence features you genuinely use before any renewal conversation, because many stores pay for capability they never switched on.

Is Edge Delivery Services worth considering?

It is where Adobe active front end investment has moved, so it deserves a look, but it suits a narrower set of stores than the surrounding noise suggests. It targets content led commerce where page speed and authoring workflow matter most, and it asks your team to work differently rather than simply swapping a theme. For a typical store with an existing Luma or Hyva front end and people who maintain it, the pragmatic answer today is still Hyva. We would consider Edge Delivery seriously for a content heavy brand starting fresh, and would not recommend replatforming a working front end onto it on roadmap direction alone.

Can you migrate us from Magento 1?

Yes, though it is a rebuild rather than an upgrade. Magento 1 reached end of life in June 2020 and shares no upgrade path with 2.x, so the catalogue, customer and order data are migrated while the theme, extensions and customisations are rebuilt on the current platform. That sounds worse than it is: it is an opportunity to drop the accumulated extensions nobody uses. We start by auditing what is actually in use versus what is merely installed, which usually shrinks the rebuild scope considerably.

How much does Adobe Commerce cost?

Adobe prices the licence individually based on your gross merchandise value, so there is no public list price and we cannot quote it for you. What we can do is tell you honestly whether you need it. If your requirements are standard B2C retail, Magento Open Source plus good hosting usually delivers the same commercial outcome, and the licence budget is better spent on performance and merchandising. If you need the B2B suite or the Adobe hosted services, the licence is generally the cheaper route compared with rebuilding that functionality.

Do you work with Magento Open Source as well?

Yes, and roughly half our commerce work is Open Source. The same engineers work across both editions because the codebase is shared, which means moving between them does not mean changing agency. It also means we have no commercial reason to push you toward the licence. If your requirements are met by Open Source, we will say so. That has cost us work on occasion, and it has also produced longer relationships than a licence sale would have. In practice the edition is settled by a short list of features rather than a preference, and we work through that list before quoting anything.

How do you handle security patches?

On a schedule, not after an incident. Adobe releases security patches on a published cadence, and the window between disclosure and active exploitation has been short: CosmicSting saw widespread breaches within days. We apply patches to a staging environment first, run a regression pass across checkout and integrations, then deploy to production in a low traffic window. For stores on a support retainer this is routine maintenance. For stores that have drifted years behind, patching is usually the first phase of a larger upgrade rather than a standalone job.
