Why is my Magento 2 store so slow?

Usually it is several problems stacked together: pages bypassing the full-page cache and hitting PHP on every request, unoptimized catalog images, render-blocking JavaScript from the theme and extensions, slow database queries behind layered navigation, and a server that was never tuned for Magento. A profiler-backed audit separates the real bottlenecks from the cosmetic ones, which is why we always audit before recommending anything.

How long does a Magento speed optimization project take?

A typical engagement runs three to five weeks end to end: 3 to 5 days for the audit and baseline, 3 to 5 days of quick wins, one to three weeks of deep fixes (caching architecture, frontend delivery, database and indexer tuning), then 30 days of monitoring. Small stores with one dominant bottleneck finish faster; heavily customized stores with many extensions take longer.

How much faster will my store actually get?

It depends entirely on where you start, which is why we record a measured baseline before changing anything and report every improvement against it. As a rough illustration, slow Magento 2 stores commonly move from a 1.5 to 3.5 second time to first byte down to a few hundred milliseconds once caching works, and from failing Core Web Vitals to passing them. We do not promise specific numbers before the audit.

Do you need full server access to optimize Magento speed?

For the deepest fixes, yes. Varnish, Redis, PHP-FPM, OPcache and database tuning all live at the server level, so SSH access (or coordination with your hosting provider) is needed. If access is restricted, we can still deliver frontend, image, extension and configuration improvements, and we will tell you upfront which findings need hosting-level cooperation.

Will speed optimization break my store or its extensions?

This is the main risk of careless speed work, and it is why every change goes to a staging environment first, one change at a time, with checkout and key journeys retested after each. Changes are peer-reviewed and documented, and each one is reversible. We never bulk-flip optimization settings on a live store.

Is Varnish really necessary for Magento 2?

Magento 2 was designed with Varnish as its recommended full-page cache, and for most stores it is the single biggest speed lever available: anonymous pages get served in milliseconds without touching PHP. The built-in file-based cache works but does not compare under real traffic. If your hosting cannot run Varnish, that is a finding in itself and we will say so.

What is a good TTFB for a Magento 2 store?

For cached pages, a few hundred milliseconds or less is achievable and is what we aim for. If your product and category pages regularly take 1.5 seconds or more before the first byte arrives, the page is almost certainly being rendered by PHP on every request instead of being served from the full-page cache, and fixing that is usually the first priority.

Do Core Web Vitals really affect Magento SEO?

Yes. Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP and CLS) are part of Google's page experience signals and are measured from real Chrome user data, not lab tests. A Magento store that fails them in field data is competing at a disadvantage against faster rivals for the same keywords. We work from the CrUX field data for your actual URLs, not just Lighthouse runs.

Can you fix a slow Magento store without changing our hosting?

Often, yes. Many stores are on adequate hardware that was simply never configured for Magento: no Varnish, cache in the database instead of Redis, default PHP-FPM pools, untuned MySQL. We fix configuration first. If the audit shows the hosting platform itself is the ceiling, we will show you the evidence and can handle the move through our Magento hosting setup service.

Why not just install a Magento speed extension?

Because most speed problems are configuration and architecture problems, and an extension adds code on top rather than removing the cause. Some optimization extensions genuinely help with images or critical CSS, but installing one on a store with a broken cache layer changes nothing. Extensions we do use are chosen after the audit, for a specific measured problem.

Do slow third-party extensions really matter that much?

Frequently they are the main event.
