Magento To Shopify Migration

Move Off Magento Without Losing Catalog Data Or Search Rankings

Magento 1 reached end of life years ago, and Magento 2 keeps getting more expensive to host, patch and staff for. We migrate your catalog, EAV attributes, customer accounts, order history and custom extensions onto Shopify or Shopify Plus, map every indexed URL to its new address, and reconcile every record before the old store gets switched off.

Eight Reasons Magento Merchants Move To Shopify

A Magento to Shopify migration means moving your catalog, customers, order history and custom logic off Magento’s self-hosted architecture onto Shopify’s managed platform. These are the eight problems that usually trigger the decision.

Magento 1 End Of Life

Magento 1 stopped receiving security patches years ago, leaving stores exposed with no official fix path.

Rising Hosting Cost

Magento’s server, CDN and Adobe Commerce licensing costs keep climbing while traffic patterns barely change.

Slow Page Speed

A heavy Magento theme and unmanaged extensions push page load times past what mobile shoppers tolerate.

Extension Conflicts

Years of installed extensions from different developers start conflicting with each other after every update.

Checkout Falling Behind

No Apple Pay, Shop Pay or one-click checkout that shoppers now expect from a modern storefront.

Shrinking Developer Pool

Magento specialists are harder to find and hire every year, while Shopify’s developer market keeps growing.

Peak Traffic Instability

Sale-day traffic spikes push self-hosted Magento infrastructure past what it was ever sized for.

Slower Feature Delivery

Every new feature needs a custom Magento module built and maintained, instead of installing a proven app.

Magento vs Shopify

What Actually Changes When You Move

Not every Magento store needs to move today. This is what changes for the ones that do.

Custom Magento modules don’t disappear, they get rebuilt as Shopify Functions, apps or theme extensions instead of staying locked inside legacy PHP.

What We Migrate

Every Part Of Your Magento Store, Mapped Deliberately

Twelve areas we work through on every Magento to Shopify migration, in the order they usually need attention.

Catalog & EAV Attributes

Challenge: Magento’s EAV attribute model doesn’t map one-to-one onto Shopify’s product structure.
Solution: a field-by-field mapping doc converting attributes into Shopify options, variants and metafields.
Outcome: a catalog that keeps its structure, not a flattened approximation.

Customer Accounts & Order History

Challenge: customers expect their order history and saved details to survive the move.
Solution: bulk import via the Admin API with a secure password reset flow.
Outcome: no re-registration required, order history intact.

Custom Extensions & Modules

Challenge: years of custom Magento modules handle logic that has no direct Shopify equivalent.
Solution: re-platform each module as a Shopify Function, app or theme extension.
Outcome: the same logic, running on supported extensibility instead of legacy PHP.

Multi-Store & Multi-Website Setups

Challenge: Magento’s store view hierarchy handles multiple brands or regions in one install.
Solution: map each store view to its own Shopify store or to Shopify Markets.
Outcome: each brand or region keeps its own catalog, pricing and domain.

B2B Customer Groups & Tier Pricing

Challenge: Magento customer groups drive tiered and negotiated pricing across your catalog.
Solution: migrate group logic onto Shopify B2B company profiles and catalogs.
Outcome: the same pricing rules, without the custom Magento configuration to maintain.

URL & SEO Redirect Mapping

Challenge: years of Magento’s indexed URL structure and backlinks pointing at your current pages.
Solution: a full 301 redirect map from every Magento URL to its Shopify equivalent.
Outcome: rankings and referral traffic carry over instead of resetting.

Payment Gateways & Checkout Rules

Challenge: your Magento payment integration was built directly against its own checkout flow.
Solution: map it to a supported Shopify Payments or gateway integration.
Outcome: transaction continuity with far less custom code to maintain.

CMS Pages & Blog Content

Challenge: CMS pages and blog content live inside Magento’s content management system.
Solution: migrate content into Shopify’s CMS with metafields for structured data.
Outcome: existing content and its SEO value carry across.

Multi-Currency & Tax Rules

Challenge: region-specific pricing and tax logic configured manually across Magento websites.
Solution: configure Shopify Markets to handle currency, duties and local pricing.
Outcome: international selling without the custom Magento configuration to maintain.

Discounts, Rewards & Promotions

Challenge: Magento reward points and cart price rules have no direct Shopify equivalent.
Solution: migrate balances and rules into metafields or a loyalty app’s data model.
Outcome: customers don’t lose earned rewards on migration day.

Post-Migration QA & Reconciliation

Challenge: a migration is only trustworthy if the numbers actually match.
Solution: a line-item reconciliation report comparing every migrated record against Magento.
Outcome: a documented, verifiable go-live, not a hopeful one.

How It Fits Together

The Data Path From Magento To Shopify

Every migration is different, but data generally moves through this path from your Magento database to a live Shopify store.

1

Magento Database

Your existing Magento 1 or Magento 2 install, the source of truth until cutover.

2

EAV & Data Mapping Layer

Field-by-field mapping from Magento’s EAV attribute model to Shopify’s product, customer and order schema.

3

Migration Scripts

Tested, repeatable scripts that run first against a private staging store.

4

Shopify Admin & Bulk Operations API

Catalog, customer and historical order data written in through Shopify’s bulk import tooling.

5

Shopify Functions & Apps

Your custom Magento extensions, rebuilt on supported extensibility instead of legacy PHP.

6

Payments

Shopify Payments or your migrated gateway integration processes transactions.

7

ERP / CRM

Rebuilt sync keeps inventory, pricing and customer records consistent post-launch.

8

301 Redirect Layer

Every indexed Magento URL routes to its Shopify equivalent.

9

Reconciliation & Monitoring

Post-launch checks confirm every record matches Magento before the old store is retired.

Quick Answers

Straight Answers, No Sales Pitch

Will we lose our SEO rankings?

Not if the redirect map is done correctly. Every indexed Magento URL gets a 301 redirect to its Shopify equivalent, tested before cutover, not discovered afterward.

What happens to our custom Magento modules?

Genuinely custom logic gets rebuilt as a Shopify Function, a private app, or a theme extension. It doesn’t disappear, it moves onto a supported platform.

Do we need to migrate everything at once?

No. Most migrations run in stages on a private staging store, with your team validating each stage before we move to the next, right up to a single planned cutover.

Business Outcomes

What Migrating Off Magento Actually Changes

Not migration for its own sake. Here’s the business case for each outcome.

Reduce Infrastructure Cost

Managed Shopify hosting replaces the server, CDN and Adobe Commerce licensing costs you currently carry directly.

Close The Security Gap

Automatic platform security patching replaces the unsupported Magento 1 codebase or a manual Magento 2 patch cycle.

Ship Features Faster

Apps and Shopify Functions replace months-long custom Magento module development for standard eCommerce features.

Improve Uptime

Elastic infrastructure absorbs sale-day traffic spikes instead of your self-hosted Magento servers falling over.

Improve Checkout Conversion

Apple Pay, Shop Pay and accelerated checkout options are available immediately, not custom-built.

Reduce Key-Person Risk

A large, active Shopify developer market replaces dependency on a shrinking pool of Magento specialists.

Support Global Expansion

Shopify Markets handles multi-currency and cross-border tax instead of custom Magento website configuration.

Improve Team Focus

Your team stops maintaining Magento infrastructure and starts building the features that differentiate your store.

AI In Migration

AI-Assisted EAV Mapping And Migration Validation

The slowest part of a Magento migration is usually not writing the import script, it’s figuring out what every EAV attribute and custom module actually does and confirming nothing dropped during the move.

AI-Assisted Attribute Mapping

Instead of a person manually comparing every Magento attribute set against Shopify’s product model, we use AI-assisted mapping to draft the likely match between EAV attributes and Shopify’s options, variants and metafields, then have an engineer verify every mapping before it’s used in a script.

Automated Content Migration Validation

Product descriptions, images and category pages get automated comparison checks between the Magento record and the migrated one, flagging dropped attributes, missing variant combinations or broken formatting before your team ever sees them.

Faster Reconciliation At Scale

For catalogs in the tens or hundreds of thousands of SKUs, AI-assisted comparison catches mismatches a manual spot-check would miss, so the reconciliation report reflects the whole dataset, not a sample of it.

Built By Our AI Team

These mapping and validation tools come from our own AI Development Services team, covering AI agent development, automation and generative AI work, applied here as part of the migration itself rather than a separate add-on product.

Why Raulji Technologies

We Audit Your Magento Store Before We Migrate Anything

A Magento migration goes wrong when scripts get written before anyone fully understands what the store’s extensions and EAV structure actually do. Here’s how we avoid that.

Discovery Workshops

Structured sessions with your team to document what your Magento extensions and customizations actually do before we touch them.

Architecture Planning

A written technical design covering every data flow, before a single migration script is built.

Code Reviews

Every migration script and rebuilt extension is peer-reviewed before it runs against real data.

QA Testing

Staged testing on a private store, not the live domain, until every checkout path is verified.

Security Review

A review of how customer and payment data is handled at every step of the transfer.

Performance Optimization

Migrated stores are checked against Core Web Vitals before go-live, not left to be discovered after.

Documentation

Every mapping decision and rebuilt module is documented and handed over, not kept in one person’s head.

Long-Term Support

Hypercare monitoring after go-live, plus ongoing support once your team is confident running Shopify.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Magento To Shopify Migration

What does a Magento to Shopify migration actually involve?

It means moving your product catalog, EAV attributes, customer accounts, order history, custom extensions and CMS content from Magento onto Shopify or Shopify Plus. A typical engagement runs through a platform audit, field-by-field data mapping, a staged migration into a private store, custom logic rebuilt as Shopify Functions or apps, a full 301 redirect map, then a planned cutover. The mapping stage is where migrations are won or lost, because the two platforms model commerce differently and the differences are not cosmetic. Deciding early what becomes a variant, a metafield or an app is far cheaper than discovering the mismatch after the data is loaded.

How long does a Magento to Shopify migration take?

A straightforward migration with a few hundred products usually takes 4 to 6 weeks. Stores with heavy custom extensions, multi-store setups or B2B tier pricing typically run 6 to 12 weeks, depending on how much custom logic has to be rebuilt rather than replaced with an app. The variable is almost never data volume, since moving fifty thousand products is a longer script and not a harder problem. It is the behavior. Every pricing rule, shipping condition and checkout customization that exists in Magento has to be re-expressed in Shopify's model, and each one needs a decision before it needs code.

What does Shopify not do that Magento did?

Worth knowing before you commit rather than after. Shopify gives you less control over checkout unless you are on Plus, and even then it is defined extension points rather than free rein. Complex B2B pricing rules, deeply nested category logic and highly custom attribute structures are all things Magento does natively that need apps, Functions or metafields on Shopify. You also give up server level control, which is a loss if you used it and a relief if you did not. In exchange you stop maintaining infrastructure entirely. We map your specific requirements against this during the audit so nothing important surfaces late.

How do you handle payment and tax configuration on the new store?

As its own workstream, because that is where launches slip quietly. Payment means choosing between Shopify Payments and a third party gateway, which affects transaction fees and whether some features are available at all, then testing real transactions rather than assuming the setup is right. Tax means configuring rates for every region you sell into and confirming how your accounting system expects to receive orders. Neither is difficult, but both must be finished before cutover and both need somebody on your side who can confirm the numbers, since we can configure a rate but cannot verify your tax position for you.

Can you migrate a multi-store Magento setup?

Yes. Each Magento store view or website is mapped either to its own Shopify store or handled through Shopify Markets, depending on whether the stores share a catalog or need to stay genuinely separate. Markets suits the common case of the same products sold with different currencies, pricing, languages and domains. Separate stores make sense when the catalogs, brands or fulfillment operations really do diverge, because that isolation is the point. The tradeoff is administrative, since separate stores mean separate apps, themes and reporting. We work through that with you before migrating rather than discovering the constraint halfway through.

Do customer accounts and order history come over?

Yes. Customer records are migrated with their group assignments, and historical orders are imported as archived Shopify orders tied to the matched customer, so shoppers see their past purchases when they log in after the switch. One thing worth planning for is that passwords do not migrate, because Magento stores them hashed and no platform can recover the originals. Customers set a new password on first login. We handle that with a clear pre-launch email rather than letting people meet an unexplained failed login, since a confused returning customer at the moment of a relaunch is an avoidable loss.

What about my Magento B2B pricing and customer groups?

Magento customer group and tier pricing rules are migrated onto Shopify B2B company profiles and catalogs, so negotiated pricing and net terms keep working without your team reconfiguring them from scratch. Worth knowing on both sides of the move: Magento's B2B features, including company accounts, shared catalogs and requisition lists, are Adobe Commerce capabilities rather than Open Source ones, and Shopify's B2B tooling lives on Shopify Plus. We check what your buyers actually use before mapping anything, because a rule that exists in the database but no customer has triggered in two years is worth retiring rather than rebuilding.

Is Magento 1 or Magento 2 different to migrate?

The destination is the same, but Magento 1 stores are usually the more urgent case, because that platform reached end of life in June 2020 and has received no security patches since. Running an unpatched storefront that takes card details is the real risk, and it does not improve with time. Magento 1 migrations also tend to need extra discovery, since documentation on older installs is thinner, the developers who built them have often moved on, and customizations were frequently made directly in core files rather than as modules. We budget for that reading time instead of pretending the two cases are identical.

What do you check before calling the migration complete?

A reconciliation pass compares product counts, order totals and customer records against the original Magento database, redirect rules are tested for the highest-traffic URLs, and checkout, account login and search are manually verified on the live Shopify store before handover. We also check the quiet paths that automated counts miss: tax on a real order to a real address, a discount code, an out-of-stock product, an email receipt actually arriving. Totals matching is necessary but not sufficient, because a catalog can reconcile perfectly while checkout fails for one shipping zone, and that stays invisible until a customer meets it.

Do you migrate custom Magento theme design?

We rebuild your visual design and brand elements as a new Shopify or Shopify Plus theme rather than porting Magento template files, because the two platforms use entirely different templating systems and a literal port produces something fragile that neither team can maintain. A relaunch is also the natural moment to fix what the old theme got wrong. We carry over the brand, typography and the layouts your customers recognize, then take the opportunity to correct the parts that were hurting conversion, since Baymard's research across dozens of studies puts average cart abandonment at 70.19 percent and much of that is checkout friction.

What about EAV attributes and custom product data?

Magento's EAV attribute model is mapped field by field onto Shopify's product options, variants and metafields before any migration script runs, so structured data like size, material or spec sheets carries across instead of being flattened into description text. This is the least glamorous stage and the one that decides whether the new store is usable. Shopify limits how many options a purchasable variant can carry, so attributes Magento treated interchangeably have to be sorted into those that drive a variant and those that are descriptive metadata powering filters, search and merchandising. Getting that split wrong is expensive to undo later.

Do you provide support after the migration goes live?

Yes. Every migration includes a 30-day hypercare period with daily monitoring checks, and ongoing Shopify maintenance and support retainers are available afterward if you want continued coverage. Hypercare exists because the first month is when reality tests the assumptions. Search indexes settle, redirects meet real inbound links, integrations meet real order volume, and returning customers meet the new login flow. We watch order rate, checkout errors, 404s and organic traffic against your pre-migration baseline, so a problem is identified by us against a number rather than by you against a feeling that something is off.
