Why DNS Matters

DNS Is The First Thing That Happens On Every Visit

Before a single page loads, before an email arrives, before checkout can process a payment, DNS has to resolve correctly and quickly.

What is DNS? DNS (Domain Name System) is the directory that translates a domain name like yourbusiness.com into the server address a browser or email client needs to connect to. Every website visit, every email and every API call starts with a DNS lookup.

Zero-downtime migration. Every DNS record is mirrored and verified at the destination before the authorization code is released, so your website and email keep working through the entire transfer window.

Managed Anycast DNS

One Domain, 130+ Points Of Presence

Anycast lets the same DNS address live in more than 130 locations worldwide. Every visitor is answered by the nearest one automatically.

How does Anycast DNS improve website performance? Anycast routes each DNS query to the closest available server, instead of one central location. That cuts DNS lookup time, reduces the distance data has to travel, and keeps resolving even if one region goes offline.

DNS Architecture

What Actually Happens Between A Click And A Page Load

Seven stages happen in the time it takes to blink. Here is what each one does, in plain English.

01VISITORTypes your domain or clicks a link
02RESOLVERTheir ISP asks where the domain lives
03ANYCASTRequest routes to the nearest point of presence
04AUTH_DNSReturns the correct, DNSSEC-signed record
05WEBSITEBrowser connects and the page loads
06MONITORResponse time and uptime logged continuously

Email Authentication

Make Sure Your Emails Actually Reach The Inbox

SPF, DKIM, DMARC and BIMI work together to prove an email genuinely came from your domain.

Why does email authentication matter? Without SPF, DKIM and DMARC configured correctly, attackers can send emails that appear to come from your domain, and legitimate marketing or invoice emails are more likely to land in spam.

SPF

Lists which mail servers are allowed to send email for your domain.

DKIM

Signs every outgoing message with a private key.

DMARC

Tells receiving servers what to do with mail that fails SPF or DKIM.

BIMI

Displays your verified brand logo next to authenticated emails.

DNS Security

Closing The Gaps Attackers Actually Use

What is DNSSEC? DNSSEC adds a digital signature to DNS records, so resolvers can verify the answer they receive has not been altered, preventing attackers from redirecting your customers to fraudulent websites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Domain & DNS Management

What is DNS?

DNS, the Domain Name System, is the directory that translates a name like yourbusiness.com into the server address a browser, mail client or API needs to connect to. Every website visit, every email and every API call begins with a lookup, which is why DNS is the highest-leverage and least-watched part of most companies' infrastructure. It is also the single point where an error is total rather than partial: a wrong record does not slow your site down, it makes the site, the email or both simply cease to exist for everyone. That asymmetry is the reason we treat DNS changes as reviewed deployments rather than quick control panel edits.

What is DNSSEC and do I need it?

DNSSEC adds a chain of cryptographic signatures to your DNS records so a resolver can verify the answer it received was genuinely published by you and was not altered in transit. Without it, a poisoned resolver can send your customers to a server you do not own while the address bar still shows your domain. Most enterprise security reviews and many vendor questionnaires now expect it enabled. The reason it is not universal is that it is unforgiving: an expired or mismatched signature makes a domain fail to resolve entirely, so it needs managed key rollovers and monitoring, which is exactly what we take on rather than switching it on and hoping.

Why does email authentication matter?

Without SPF, DKIM and DMARC configured and aligned, anyone can send mail that appears to come from your domain, and your genuine invoices and campaigns are far likelier to land in spam. Those three records answer three different questions: which servers may send for you, whether the message was altered in transit, and what a receiver should do when a message fails. DMARC is the one that turns the other two into enforcement, and it is where most setups stall on a permissive policy for years. Major mailbox providers have tightened bulk sender requirements considerably, so this has moved from good hygiene to a deliverability prerequisite.

How does Anycast DNS improve website performance?

Anycast advertises the same address from more than 130 points of presence, so a lookup is answered by whichever location is closest on the network rather than by one central server on another continent. That trims the DNS resolution step, which sits before the connection is even opened and therefore delays everything that follows it. The larger benefit is resilience: if a region goes down or absorbs a volumetric attack, queries route to the next location instead of failing, and the domain keeps resolving. Unicast DNS makes that one server both your performance floor and your single point of failure, which is a poor trade for a service this critical.

How does Raulji Technologies manage enterprise DNS?

We combine managed Anycast DNS, DNSSEC signing, continuous monitoring and infrastructure-as-code deployment, so every domain and record change is version-controlled, reviewed and traceable instead of typed into a control panel by whoever had the login. That matters because the most common cause of a DNS outage is not an attack, it is a well-meant manual edit with no review and no record of what changed. Managing zones as code gives you a diff before it ships, an audit trail afterwards and the ability to roll back to a known-good state in one action. Monitoring watches resolution and record integrity from multiple locations continuously.

How long does a domain transfer take?

Most transfers complete within the standard ICANN window of about five to seven days, and the delay is procedural rather than technical. We audit and mirror every DNS record at the gaining provider before the transfer begins, so nothing is missing at the moment control moves. Two things commonly block a transfer and are worth checking early: a domain registered or transferred within the last 60 days is locked by ICANN policy and cannot move until that period ends, and the administrative contact email on file must be one you can actually read, since approval goes there. Your site and email keep running normally throughout.

Will there be any downtime during a DNS migration?

No. Your existing provider stays live and serving while we import, validate and test the complete zone at the new one, comparing records side by side rather than trusting an automated import. Nameservers only switch once every record is verified, and because the old zone is left intact and identical, a resolver holding a cached answer during propagation gets the same result either way. If anything looks wrong we revert the nameservers within minutes. We also lower time-to-live values in advance of the switch, which is the step that turns a potentially day-long propagation tail into something that settles in minutes.

What is Registry Lock and do I need it?

Registry Lock places a hold at the registry itself, so your domain cannot be transferred, deleted or have its nameservers changed until the request is verified out of band with a human. It is the control that survives the scenario every other measure assumes will not happen, which is your registrar account being compromised. Ordinary registrar locks and two-factor authentication both sit inside that account. If your domain carries your revenue, your email or your customers' trust, the case is straightforward. The trade-off is deliberate friction, since a legitimate change also needs that verification, so it suits stable business-critical domains rather than ones you edit weekly.

Can you manage domains that are spread across multiple registrars?

Yes. We regularly consolidate scattered portfolios into one managed account, or manage them where they are when consolidation is not practical, with a single view of renewals, DNS and WHOIS across all of them. Fragmentation is a real risk rather than an inconvenience: portfolios spread across several registrars typically have domains registered to a former employee's email, some with auto-renew off, and no one person who could list them all. The first thing we do is inventory everything and find those gaps, because a domain lost to a missed renewal is far more expensive and far harder to recover than the consolidation work itself.

What happens if my domain is close to expiring?

Managed domains are set to auto-renew with advance expiry alerts, so renewal never depends on one email reaching one inbox that may belong to someone who has left. If a domain outside our management is close to lapsing we can usually still help with an emergency renewal. It is worth knowing how the timeline works, because it gets expensive quickly: after expiry a domain typically enters a grace period where renewal is still ordinary, then a redemption period where recovery carries a substantial registry fee, and after that it can be released for anyone to register. Expired domains also break email instantly, not just the website.

Do you support managing DNS through an API or tools like Terraform?

Yes. DNS records can be defined as code and deployed through the same CI/CD pipeline as your application, reviewed and versioned in Git rather than edited by hand. The practical benefit is that a record change goes through the process every other production change goes through: someone proposes it, someone else reviews the diff, it is applied automatically and the history explains why it exists. That last part matters more than teams expect, because most zones accumulate records nobody dares delete since nobody remembers what they were for. It also makes rebuilding a zone after a mistake a single command rather than an archaeology exercise.

What is the difference between Managed DNS and Enterprise Protection?

Managed DNS covers the operational layer: Anycast resolution, DNSSEC signing and key rollover, monitoring, email authentication records and API or infrastructure-as-code access. Enterprise Protection adds the defensive layer on top of all of that: Registry Lock, brand protection covering typosquatting and trademark monitoring, and a dedicated DNS engineer. The dividing line is roughly what you are protecting against. Managed DNS protects against outages and misconfiguration, which is what most businesses actually experience. Enterprise Protection protects against someone deliberately targeting your domain or your brand, which matters once the name itself is valuable enough to be worth attacking.

Do you help set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC?

Yes. We configure and align all three across every system that sends on your behalf, then monitor the DMARC reports so an unauthorized or misconfigured sender is flagged rather than quietly damaging your deliverability. The work that takes time is inventory, since most companies send from more places than they realize: the website, a CRM, a helpdesk, an invoicing tool, a marketing platform, someone's personal client. Missing one and moving straight to an enforcing policy is how legitimate mail starts disappearing. We start in monitoring mode, use the reports to find every genuine sender, then tighten the policy once the picture is complete.

What is brand protection for domains?

Brand protection means monitoring for typosquatting and look-alike registrations, defensively registering the obvious variants and regional extensions before someone else does, and watching new registrations that infringe your trademarks. The threat is rarely someone building a competing website. It is a domain one character away from yours being used to send convincing invoice fraud to your customers or your finance team, which is difficult to defend against technically because the sending domain is genuinely authenticated, just not yours. Detecting a registration early gives you options, whether that is a takedown, a dispute or simply warning your customers before anyone is defrauded.

How quickly do you respond if a domain or DNS record is compromised?

Domain and DNS incidents are treated as priority events, and work typically starts within the same business day once unauthorized changes are reported. The sequence is identify what changed, restore the correct records, then lock down how the change was made, in that order, because restoring service without closing the access route just invites a repeat. Speed matters unusually here because propagation cuts both ways: a malicious record can be cached by resolvers worldwide for as long as its time-to-live allows, so the correction takes time to reach everyone even after it is published. Registry Lock is what prevents most of these outright.

Do I need a dedicated DNS engineer if I only manage one domain?

Usually not, and we will say so rather than sell you the higher tier. A single business domain is well covered by Managed DNS, which already includes DNSSEC, monitoring, email authentication and reviewed changes. A dedicated engineer starts to earn its cost at a genuine threshold: a large portfolio, uptime commitments you have contractually promised your own customers, frequent changes across multiple environments, or a need for Registry Lock and brand protection. If your DNS changes twice a year and one domain carries everything, the honest recommendation is Managed DNS with Registry Lock, which addresses the actual risk far more cheaply.
